Log book info

Found 15th Apr 2010
A friend of mine bought a car as he says it was a bargain. He's had the car for around 6 months, and it has an MOT. He recently asked me if i would like to buy the car but he does not know where the log book is. He says he thought it was in with the service history etc but it isn't. How would i get a new log book and do i have to pay for it? and also what is the cheapest hpi check? There shouldn't be outstanding finance as it's an S reg but i just want to make sure there's nothing dodgy about it before i buy it. Thanks in advance

You can get a duplicate via a post office form. Someone else will no doubt give you its reference

FYI:
]Replacing a lost or stolen registration certificate
---
You must replace your registration certificate (V5C) (formerly known as a log book) if it’s been lost, stolen, damaged or defaced. You can apply by post using a V62 application form or you may be able to get a duplicate over the phone using your debit or credit card.

Apply by phone on 0300 790 6802

You can apply by phone if:

you’re shown as the registered keeper on the registration certificate
your name, address and vehicle details haven’t changed
you have a debit or credit card to pay the £25 fee - the cost of a duplicate registration certificate

Apply by post

You’ll need to:

complete a V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C)’ available for download, or from any Post Office® branch, or from a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) local office
enclose the £25 fee
send your completed application to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DD
If your name, address or both have changed, you can notify DVLA on the V62 form at the same time.

PS. Just because a vehicle is an "S" Reg do not assume there is no finance outstanding on it.

The current owner will need to apply for a duplicate V5 before you buy the car
