Lollipop People - Waste of money?

Now, i'm not on about the ones that stand in dangerous and/or difficult places to cross, but the ones who stand at a pelican crossing and merely press the button, and then walk to the middle with the lollipop whilst the people cross.

Surely a pelican crossing is sufficient enough on it's own?

I got a little mixed up, now corrected.

You must be joking the way people drive these days they don't stop for adults nevermind small children, a busy crossing must be pretty terryfying to a small child.

Erm dont some people do it for free? Community service?

OH MY GOD! I thought I was the only one!!! I see SO many lollipop "people" doing exactly that!!! Sorry but if you can't teach your child to press a button, wait until cars stop moving and then walk across the road, you need to sort yourself out!! ARGH! There's so many people out there losing their jobs, yet people are getting paid to press a button? AARGHHH!!!

They are only there at peak times when there are lots of children around and lots of parents driving with children in the car doing the school run. young kids can be easily distracted, no matter how well the parents teach them, so I don't thionk money is the issue if it saves youngsters from being hit by a car.

all the ones near me are near traffice lights waste of money in my opinion

Errrr...don't parents take small children to school any more??

The schools have a responsibility of ensuring the pupils cross the road in a safe manner too and from school, hence why you get the Lolly Pop "person"

Don't think so, my mum used to get paid when she did it.

I have honestly NEVER seen a lollipop person at traffic lights, what would be the point of that??

I don't think it's the people crossing the road that's the problem. It's the idiots driving with the complete disregard for other's safety.

Uhh... no! If someone in a car stops for a traffic light... how is the person behind them going to hit a child?! The idea of a pedestrian crossing is that you PRESS the button, WAIT for the traffic to stop and then CROSS.

no get more old duffers on the crossings then you get more points when you run one over

Zebra crossings, that's totally different. I always stop for people when I am driving but am amazed at the amount of people who don't!

Surely they only get paid for an hour or so either side of the school day? 7-9 and 2-4 or something? Hardly breaking the bank for the tax payer if so.. Worth the money if it saves 1 kid from getting hit by a lunatic driver or a kid walking across without looking..

So what about the rest of the road without a lollipop person? The kid wouldn't walk across that bit without looking?

All for it, if it saves childrens lives near busy roads.

Have you encountered the one near sainsburys yet, on the bank near bf school?

She is a right power hungry warden she steps out straight away without waiting for a natural gap in traffic? She is a danger

If I don't think they'll stop, I just stick my foot out as if I'm going to cross.

In my experience they learn a valuable lesson as they slam their brakes on and the car from behind hits into the back of them.

Paying somebody minimum wage to help kids cross a road safely to avoid uneccesary accidents is seen as a waste of money these days? The world has truly gone mad

should be 20mph outside all schools during morning and afternoon anyway. Having been rear ended by an idiot because he was in a hurry to catch a train, it only takes one accident to kill a child. Each death costs hundreds of thousands so its money saved.

A local old lollipop lady was killed by a car recently by some idiot driver.
Some children can be unaware of danger or rules, or forget when playing a game or having a chat with a friend so yeah, I think lollipop people are useful and the majority are just volunteers or people on community service I thought so don't see a problem. Even if they are paid for a few hours a week then it's good for the roads, good for the children, good for the community (I think it brings a sense of security and it's nice to see) and brings peace of mind for the parents.

the path to my primary school does not have a zebra crossing, so a lollipop lady is mandatory because we had to cross a busy main road, it was a side road but very busy and before we had the lollipop lady, children use to end up waiting to cross the road for ages, i personally felt more secure with the assistance of the lollipop lady

    + 1

We have the exact problem in Dundee

There is one guy along from the Shell garage on the way to KFC and also one at the bridge in Broughty Ferry

Both just stand there and press the button all the time, the line of traffic in the morning is shocking

What does that have to do with what I said.

NO, the idea is to press the button, wait for the green man and then cross. Some drivers try to beat the red light, therefore knocking the crossing child over.

The lollipop man down my way is about 70, has a face so kindly I suspect he might actually be santa, he always stops the traffic for me despite the fact that I'm in my 20s, he greets me as "the guitar man", and sings jollily to himself as I leave. He's great, and if lollipop people get scrapped as a costcut, I'm leaving the **** country.
