Looking for a family holiday abroad

This will be our 1st holiday outside the UK and i dont really know where to start.

Is it best to go to a travel agent or book online? I want to be able to book a package deal with no hidden costs.

As we have 2 kiddies age 5 and 8 (at time of travel) it has to be a short flight. Only going for the weather, beach and good pool. Pref all inclusive too.

Any recommendations please?

Thanks

We always took our kids away with Haven Europe (now Siblu) we stayed all over France, you just pay for the caravan (larger static with mod cons)

Kids now in their 20's but still in contact with friends they made 15 years ago.

Lots of activities for the kids to join in and time to relax for Mum and Dad.

Also there used to be an offer if you booked to go before end June, then you got so many days free.

Thanks but ive kind of had it with haven sites and caravans for now. Its all we've done for the last 8 years!

yeah cheap but rubbish i went 6 and half years ago and would never go again we stayed all inclusive and what a joke that is,if you like cold watery bolanaise for breakfast served with an awful aniseed tasteing drink then go for it. personally as a first holiday i would just go to spain.oh and we paid 1500 to go to bulgaria 2 adults 2 kids so not the cheapest place to go plus we stayed in a 4 star hotel all inclusive and had to eat out everyday so cost us alot not to mention its a german resort and my kids couldnt even go to the kids clubs as they were all spoke in german not good at all.
have a look on these www.icelolly.com and www.sunshine.co.uk

sounds like your all inclusive was a bad experience-our holiday was completely different-we just took bed and breakfast-ate out for lunch and dinner, kids club was great, most people spoke english and the beaches and activities were hugely varied and mega cheap.

Thanks for the links greyparrot. My friend said Bulgaria was rubbish too - all the food and entertainment was german. Maybe it depends on what area you go to.

Hi, my advice would be to book a flight and villa seperately, rent a car and make your own hol. You can get some wonderful villas with private heated pools from owners direct or the like. it makes for a far better holiday, and you can have your own rooms so the kids can go to bed early etc etc. if you want any help then by all means pm me.
we go by this method at least three times a year for our family hol, and when my little one is not with us we still book our flight and hotele seperate it give us loads of freedom to explore or search out new places.
Try malaga region, or flights to murcia, although it wont be overly warm at the moment but no snow!!!

Sorry should have said we will be going in July sometime. We dont want to hire a car and not bothered about sightseeing either. We can do all that when the kids are a bit older. For now though we just want to be next to a beach.

i would strongly recommend you go on your hols in june or the very begining of july as when the schools are on hols the prices double.if you go on one of the links i posted just check out junes prices compared with july as it could be a few hundred less.

We went to Aparthotel Coma gran with Thomson last yr in school hols and was fab for children. Can still get free places for kids i think too with this hotel. But only avail throught Thomson. Food great we were half board. Other good hotel is Son Baulo C'an Picafort in Majorca again thru Thomson but available on lots of websites where can book own flight to Palma and then hotel seperately. Try Jetline travel website. Had good kids club and is beachfront and good food rating and i believe family rooms. Could either get taxi to hotel or Majorca airport shuttle service which v affordable.

Hubby is very much against the idea of taking the kids out of school for a holiday but im working on him lol. I might get away with the week before they break up but not sure it makes much difference to price

i think once he sees the difference in price it will change his mind. we went to cuba all inclusive in june last year it cost us 4,200 as we needed 2 separate rooms as my 2 eldest are 13 and 15 and there childs prices only went up to 12 years therefore they were looked at as adults.i looked in to it for when they would be off school but the price was 6,900 which i would never be able to afford.i think if the child has a very good attendance the schools dont mind also your children are still young so they wouldnt be missing out on important exams etc.goodluck on working on him anyway.xx

well i hope you find somewhere really nice and have a fab holiday.x

obviously depends on your budget but we are going back to PortAventura in spain for the third year running in June. Really can't fault it.......my kids are now 7 & 9. Found Portland to be cheapest when booking.

My advice is find somewhere in a brochure then use Tripadvisor to filter the garnish.

yeah getting the car is far better, honest. my little one is 6 and we always take the car to the beach, its perfect for carrying the bucket, spade, lilo, beachball, towels, drinks yada yada yada......................plus you are not having an hours transfer and dropping everyone off at their hotel first too.

or you could just get a taxi, but most times works out same price for a return cab as renting a car for the week.

Cala Bona/Cala Millor in Majorca - 2.5 hour flight from UK (depending on where you fly from), an hour transfer time BUT worth it! Resorts flow into one another and are completely flat, no lager louts, plenty of British eateries but also a lot of local and internal cuisine as well...all tastes catered for.

We first went there back in the 70's, discovered it again in 1999 and have been back pretty much every year ever since...love the feel of the place and the security and have made lots of great friends out there.

We go DIY as we're a family of 5 and usually get hammered for under occupancy supplements with the likes of Thomson/First Choice etc. We book our own flights and apartment but there are a lot of high street and internet based ta's that go there.

I'd second having a look at www.Portland-holidays.co.uk
around 23rd July still offering free child places - Hotel Presidente Portinax Ibiza for one, It's a great super family hotel next to a beautiful beach, perfect for little ones.

Thank you everyone, im slowing looking through all your ideas and adding rep x

I would ask around friends and parents at school, get recommendations from those you trust. Most of my friends book the same resort every year because they have always had a good experience. Also gives you someone to blame if its a shambles!!!!
