Looking For A New PC Tower - Budget - £400

14
Found 10th Mar 2011
Hi,

I have saved up £400 to spend on a tower PC (no monitor or keyboard). Please can anyone advise whats the best PC I can get for this amount?

I've been advised that 4gb ram is a minimum, 1TB Hard disc and ideally a graphics card.

I only use the PC for internet usage and simple MS Office tasks. No gaming requirements.

If you can advise on any deals I'd be grateful.

Thanks for your time and help.

Would you be ok putting it together yourself?

Not really, but would like to understand further what building my own would bring. I have a friend who I could ask to assist me in the building as they are into that type of thing.

Well for £400 you would get a faster, with more storage and a choice of case. if you buy off the shelf for that money you will get generic older components normally. For what you have said you need it for i would say you could spend £250ish so every £ extra is a better PC

Would you kindly have the time to spec me out a machine and distributors of the components? One thing I would really like is a quiet power supply. My current PC is a AMD 2100 athlon with 1 gig of memory, running XP, with a very loud power supply/fan.

This would not be a bad start to look at:
AMD Phenom II X4 840 Socket AM3 3.2GHz 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor, 257236 £88.48

MSI HD 4670 1GB GDDR3 DVI HDMI HDCP Out PCI-E Graphics Card, 169828 £46.10
Cart total inc vat: £382.36

All of this is from ebuyer and you might be able to find a few of the bits even cheaper on places like play, novatech, scan but ebuyer generally is the cheapest allrounder, the number before each component price is the quick find code on ebuyers website. For what you need i would consider not even buying the graphics card, try the built in graphics and if you need a proper card later on buy one then as the built is is quite good for what you want it for and will even play games, so try it

Hi again, still undecided. I have seen this week the following 'self build', its without the OS and graphics card. Which deal would be better, the one in the link below or your one?

Thanks

That is good enough for you since you are not interested in playing any new games.
But since you are willing to spend 400 u might as well go for a laptop.

The thing about buying separate component you really need to make sure you buy the right component and think if you want to add more component in the future. Im not a geek but if you follow Chuckles1001 you might need to change the PSU since it only got 1x SATA. Might need atleast 2.

I bought a case from Scan - Coolermaster that is sound proofed and extremely quiet

I also built my own with no prior knowledge - and its still working lol 3 weeks later hahaha

Hashi. Quite a few people have also suggested I go for a laptop. Any recommendations?

I'd suggest buy a laptop or build your own, as already recommended to you. Pre-built towers from the shops tend to be badly put together, massively out dated and/or over priced, and more often than not all three! Good luck with whatever you decide.
