Looking For A Suitable Wheelchair, Purchase Advice Needed

My wife is waiting for a double knee replacement and is finding getting about outside near impossible at this moment in time. Looking for a suitable wheelchair that will help her with this.

Looking for one that is pushed not self propelled and is lightweight and fits in the boot of the car. It won't be needed around the house, just out and about for shopping and a breath of fresh air type trips. Could be anything up to 6-18 months worth of use, depending on time it takes for the operations to be done.

Looked on Amazon, but so many to choose from and as had no experience of choosing this sort of thing, any experiences, recommendation or links for wheelchairs would be much appreciated. I have a budget of about £150

    Thanks

If you look on gumtree people give them away, there are so many about, your local care home may also be able to lend/give you 1 they can also let you fold and try it in the boot, make sure the handles fold down too for space gd luck

I wouldn't buy new. Especially if it's only temporary while waiting for the operation. Gumtree, freecycle or charity shops.

lloyds pharmacy do wheelchairs now or local store has them available to look at and try out. I work in physiotherapy and advise that you only need an attendant push chair (with small wheels). make sure you get one that is the correct width, that is not a tight fit. always use with a correct size cushion and always use the footplates. You could get a second hand one but check that it is in good order.

Lloyds pharmacy £58 check it out first for comfort

I'm pretty certain if your wife's circumstances matches the relevant criteria a wheelchair (whether temporary or not) should be provided on the NHS free of charge.

I would be contacting the hospital and/or the GP to ask for help.

contact your doctor they will arrange one for you but might take time.

Failing the above suggestions, the Red Cross lend out mobility aids.

If you are using outside do not get one with small wheels they are worse then supermarket trolleys to push if the ground is only slightly uneven, Get a self propelled one even if you do not intend to self propel, they are much easier to push and steer even over rough ground. You can get ones that fold up more then enough for a car boot.

Look on gumtree or local ebay

Sorry to here about your wife.

My mother died a few years back & spent the last couple of years in her life needing a wheelchair. She eventually died in a local hospice.

I only say this as she donated all of her possessions upon her death to the hospice who looked after her when she died.

I was reminded of this when I walked past the hospices charity shop a couple of weeks ago. In the window of the shop were a couple of wheelchairs..

So it might be wise to visit your local hospice charity shop rather than buy used off of ebay or gumtree. At least the money paid will be spent on the wellbeing of others rather than someones pocket.

And on some of them the wheels can be popped off if you need to get it in a car.
