Looking for reasonably priced smart plug (or smart bulb)

I am looking to automate my lights especially for when I am on holiday or home late.

Ideally a smart plug which doesn't need a hub (to keep costs down). Be even better if it can be controlled via command line!

    Any ideas?

Not sure about your command line comment but I've had Wemo for over a year now and they were fine.

However, recent app updates and firmware 'upgrades' to the devices have made them so unreliable as to whether something is off or on, i have just changed them all for TP Link Smart Plugs. The TP Link Kasa app is beautifully designed and a good 4-5 seconds quicker at switching on/off than the wemo version. Will never go back to Wemo now.

    No hub needed either.

yep can second the TP-Link ones - got 2 in the last Argos discount and they work well via the Kasa app - either setup a schedule or just switch on via the app

Have you thought about going low tech, you can now buy led light bulbs (use 10w of power) with dusk to dawn sensors for around a tenner on ebay?
You can also buy microwave motion sensor led light bulbs that are very sensitive, and will trigger if anyone passes a window with one inside.
I have one in my hallway, as my lightswitch is about 10 foot up a dark hallway, works a treat.
There are also random switching light socket adaptors, but they only seem to be designed for incandescent bulbs (min 40w)

easr - I like the Dusk to dawn light bulb idea

Thank you ThePasty and elitom - I didn't realise the TP link ones didn't need a hub! I will definitely keep this in mind for my future projects!

Just to give everyone an update and for future reference, I decided to go with the TP-Links and use this to automate ON/OFF via my PC

£25 at Argos + my £2 flamedeer discount
