Lost / Stolen Mobile Phone - Can It Be Tracked?

My sister had her mobile phone (we think) stolen from her coat pocket at work 2 days ago. It is a contract phone. Anybody know if this can be traced by the imei number or anything? Or is it lost for good now / untraceable?

Tried phoning it but each time it goes to voice mail - sounds like they've binned her sim card.

i dont think you can trace it but your provider may be able to brick the phone from its imei number so that would screw up whoever stole it. you should phone the provider anyway to get the sim blocked so that the "new owner" doesnt run up a big bill in your name.

IMEI number is traceable if you have that i believe.

the police can trace a mobile phone, as long as its on.

Even if they are using a different sim?

they need the IMEI number to do that though do they not? The IMEI number is on the box that it came in i think.

not sure what they need, think its done through your network though. If its done my IMEI, then that is unique to the handset, so changing the SIM wont make a difference.

the phone can be traced by its imie number, no matter what sim is in it or it it's been unlocked
the imie is the phones serial number and its embedded into a chip in the phone, the networks can trace this to within a few feet of where it is, however they wont do it without the police asking them to
and the police more than likely wont bother, they'll just give you areference number to claim on your insurance.
However make sure you call your network to report it stolen or lost as until you do any calls made using your sim will be billed to you

ps your phone company know the imie number if the phone you have was got off them as part of a contract.

they dont know mine

our phone got nicked at a shopping mall - told the police, had description of guy, the store manager saw it on cctv- but refused to give the cctv footage tot he police. the police couldnt make em give it either. nowt happened. phone gone. it went on forever. gave up in the end. easier to get a new blimmin phone

i haven't set foot in tk maxx again the twasdurds.

I lost my phone and got it blocked straight away, I asked in the police station but they wouldnt do anything about it. bit like the time my car got broken into, bit like the time my back car window got smashed in a separate incident.

So glad, I pay my council tax on time

I don't ever think police will chase up stolen phones. Except for if its there own.

Best to just get a crime reference number from them, and hand that over to the insurance, assuming you have it.

niirrit ull jst get a police report

The only time I can realistically see the police tracking a stolen mobile is if the owner was killed during the stealing of it.

Stolen phones don't meet the homeoffice criteria of initiating a triangulation.

Plus don't believe everything you see on csi Miami or 24. Triangulations are nowhere near accurate

Whilst were on the subject of the police,
I fell down some stairs in a nightclub on a night out and managed to knock the person infront of down with me,
While im on the floor he kicks me in the jaw, snapping it in two places (now got to metal plates in my jaw)
This was in april and i reported it after coming out of hospital a week later.
The nightclub has it all on CCTV but the police still havent managed to "gain entry to the club" although its open all weekend.
!!!!!!!!

thats the police for you!!!!
