Apps that help reduce food waste

3910246_1.jpg

Too Good To Go

On the Too Good To Go app, restaurants, cafes and bakeries list leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away. Users can then browse the map for food near them and pick up a ‘magic bag’ for a fraction of the original retail cost.

The only thing is you usually don't know what you're going to get, i've used this a few times and probably had one 'poor' bag filled with sarnies but the majority of stuff is good, and if you get too much bread etc you can always freeze most of the goods.

On iOS and Android.

OLIO

The next food waste app is OLIO

Join millions of neighbours all over the world who are using OLIO to share more, care more and waste less.

Give & get free stuff, borrow & lend household items, and shop homemade – all directly from your community.

On iOS and Android

KARMA

We’re slackers. The modern-day climate heroes. The kind of people who help save the world by doing the most basic human thing in life - eat stuff.

We’re running the world’s least ambitious, most delicious climate movement: Radical Slacktivism. To fight over-production and solve food waste.

You have missed a small hack that may not work for everyone but may help some. For the purpose of explaining I’ll use Asda but there are several options.
If you have a topcashback account then you can buy a Asda gift card and get 1.6% (16p for every £10) back but if you pay for the gift card using say a Chase card you get 1% back on that as well giving you an extra 10p
I know it’s not much but every penny counts right. Well done on getting all the loyalty card/club info.

Premier Inn - Whitbread Shareholder benefits. Shareholders with a holding of 64 shares or more are eligible to receive a shareholder benefits card. Qualifies for a free breakfast for you and your family with any night spent in their hotel. Benefit also extends to a guest room and their family staying with you at the same time. 10% off food and non alcoholic drinks at Beefeater / Brewers Fayre.

64 shares at £29 each equals outlay investment of £1856. Put it in a stocks and shares ISA so as not to pay capital gains on any taxes. Use Hargreaves Lansdowne and not AJ Bell as they dont allow nominee accounts to receive perks whereas HL do. Even better get it in a Lifetime ISA and get a government top up.

Came here to say this, if your sainsbury's is set up for Smart Shop, you can scan and shop at the same time (also good for checking prices in-store when they're missing from the shelf). I get quite a lot of Nectar Prices overlapping with bonus Nectar Points.

No idea how but I also had 10,000 Points (£50!!!) added to my Nectar card at the beginning of March.

I also downloaded the M&S Sparks app before last Halloween as they had a free £5, no minimum spend offer on it. Have had money off certain items, free £2 chocolate bar and there's currently a free hot drink at their Cafe.

Realise this only affects NHS employees but if you can get it the Blue Light card is an absolute steal at £4.99 for 2 years membership and pays for itself in no time especially if you shop at Asda with 10% off groceries til end October. bluelightcard.co.uk/newaccount.php (edited)

For the cashback category in the next update.....

Check your bank account or credit card for retailer cashback offers, especially when they offer cashback on supermarket spending.
For example, Santander sometimes offers 5% cashback at Morrisons (minimum £30 spend, maximum £10 cashback). If you won't spend £200 in one go to get the max £10 cashback, you can buy a gift card in store and use it on subsequent shops or on petrol! (edited)

This has been very useful to me. Often, the Nectar prices are based off the recent sale price so the item ends up being even cheaper. My happy day for this is Friday when the Nectar price and the Nectar points offers for the next week overlap. Even better is when the Nectar price is based on a recent sale price as I mentioned earlier. I am finding at least 3-4 items every week that are a good value just because of the app offers.

Great post, would add heat if it was possible for discussions just for the effort alone.

Some instant groceries apps have their own loyalty schemes, such as Gopuff. You earn "Puff Points" on every order which can be redeemed for discounts on future orders or freebies such as a free can of Monster Energy. There's also things like free watches but they of course cost a ridiculously high amount of points. Fam subscription members get bonus points on orders

Other instant groceries apps are available, just using Gopuff as an example as it's the best one I've used.

By far the best loyalty programme for me personally at them moment is Asda rewards. I’ve got £20+ in the cash pot through normal shopping or completing ‘missions’ (items I would’ve bought anyway).

I would’ve had to have spent 2k at Tesco to ‘earn’ the same amount but I’ve spent just a fraction of that at Asda.

Was going to mention something similar myself, I've been buying topgiftcards for supermarkets (Morrisons can be used to pay for fuel) for a while now, as you say it all adds up.

Some extra help with rising utility bills.
If you have a Santander 123 current account and pay gas&electric by direct debit, they pay 2% cashback into your account every month. It's capped at £5 a month, so for anyone paying a £250+ monthly bill will get £60 cashback over 12 months. It all helps!

    Is that with Esso?
Good if you live near an Esso garage, but could be better to keep the points and get cheaper petrol elsewhere.
I like Martin Lewis's advice, the best way to save money on fuel is to change your driving style. Treat the gas pedal like a money pump, and try to use it as gently as possible. (edited)

No probs! Gopuff is easily the best out of the ones I've tried (I can't compare Getir as it isn't available in my area), the minimum order is only £5 for Gopuff and you can now get Morrisons delivered. Prices are the same as in-store. Love it

Airtime Rewards is brill, I've earned around £60 over the last 18months just spending where I normally do. There are usually booster codes posted on hukd for extra credits and monthly challenges too.

My tesco rewards are currently paying my disney plus sub for the considerable future thanks to the £6 for 3 months offer.

    Great isn't it
I collect at least 500 bonus points every week from the app offers, on top of the SmartShop prices.

Another tip, ask Nectar for a 2nd card for your partner on the same account, effectively making it a joint account.
We have 2 different Nectar card numbers, and each card gets it's own offers in the app, but the points from both cards get added to the same pot. If you're smart, you can use both cards yourself if your partner doesn't use it much.
