Don't tell me you've only just worked this out? I can never cut an onion without rubbing my hands all over the sink afterwards. :-D They sell little doodahs made of stainless steel to rub around your hands for this purpose.

Without wanting to sound like a nerd, I believe its a lot to do with the molecular chemistry involved.

Garlic, fish etc all contain naturally occurring sulphur - this is mostly what causes the smell on your skin when you touch them. Then when you rub your hands over a stainless steel object like a knife or one of these steel soap bars, the metal atoms in the stainless steel attract & bond with the sulphur, taking it off your skin & changing it slightly in a chemical way so hence no more smell!

Apparently, lemon juice works in a similar way but I've never tried that one. I use a woman for all our kitchen duties!

So how does it work with disinfectanct, bleach, diesel etc?

Apparently a similar thing- stainless steel is an alloy - ie more than one type of metal.
The molecular properties of these different metals combine with other different chemicals in things like bleach etc.

I spoke to a wise one today who told me that there will be varying degrees of success when using stainless steel for getting rid of smelly fingers due to different qualities & consistencies within certain stainless steels & their 'attracting' abilities. i.e. a good stainless steel with a certain amount of a particular metal will be better at getting red of certain smells than other stainless steels. If you know whatta mean.

He also said this is why men's stainless steel urinals never smell of pee- its the surrounding walls & floors that smell!! Not gonna test that one though.

A possibility- rub it with an ice cube to freeze it then gently scrape off. works with chewy gum on clothes.
