Make sure you do not accidentally sign up to Amazon 'Prime'

undecided whether to post this as its not very exciting, but there are so many decent people on here that I would not want getting ripped off.

EDIT: trial for a month
I did not untick the box

I've used Amazon for years, always impressed with them and thier service.
Last night I checked my bank to find that Amazon 'prime' have taken £49 out of my account.
If you are anything like me when buying from them because all my payment is already set up I case my eyes over it and confirm.

When contacting them to ask them why they have taken money out of my bank when their is no record of me updating to Amazon 'prime' they explained in a standard fwd message that, there was a tick box in the last thing I purched that automatically signed me up to an one MONTH free trial.
This happened because I did not untick the box, or cancel. They billed me £49!

They have refunded me, but I have told everyone I know that uses amazon as I will really think twice about using them.

I know there are people that don't always check their bank and statements and I feel that they are the people they are hoping to target.

Anyway, I really hope that it help someone as £49 is a fair bit of money when you don't know what you've spent it on!

Isn't the Amazon prime trial one month and not a day?

Amazon prime for a month cloudy, I think there may have been crossed wires somewhere along the way.

I sign up for Amazon Prime every year now, but you have to remember to cancel it straight away.

I thought it was one month...you go into account settings and tick do not … I thought it was one month...you go into account settings and tick do not automatically renew or something like that and it just ends after the months up

Yep - exactly that...

I hardly call failing to notice or uncheck a tick box that had nothing to do with the purchase the OP signing up!
Its a disgrace, what use is a 1 day trial anyway and having to cancel it a day later? Kind of stunt a lesser company would use imo.
EDIT: Having seen previous posts made whilst I was posting my reply, ignore the 1 day trial part! lol
Still dont agree that it should be just some random tick box signing you up. It should be a link to a seperate page if someone wants to sign up, free trial period or not.

It is good that they have refunded you. That speaks volumes about Amazon.

I think amazon prime is a great service to be honest. Just started using it this year for about 2 months and already paid for itself

Supermod

I think the one day comes from their One Day Delivery service.

Lol

It's a 1 month trial. They spam you with emails about it before you pay too. I've used it twice

It's hardly rocket science..but anyway..my opinion amazon CS is by far the best

Apologies, I took the details in the OP as correct. Obviously from your and others experiences, some of the details were incorrect.

Its your fault for not cancelling the trial. In any case if they charge you the £49 they will still refund you if you tell them aslong as you have not used a prime delivery after you have been charged.

Clearly not the fault of Amazon but your fault. You check your account carefully maybe if you'd check your amazon account just as carefully you'd have saved yourself a little time.

Totally your fault, proves how good Amazon are because they refunded you

You clearly did not read the clear terms and conditions before you accepted the trial

Like everyone has said, it's your own fault. In future look at what you are doing and don't be a dildo.

Having read all the comments, I do totally agree that is was my fault and yes its not rocket science, but I made a mistake I wasn't aware of and I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of people out there like me that will not realise they have done it.
My lesson: read and check I have ticked only boxes that I need to avoid this happening again X)

Thanks for the support Mark, I don't consider myself to be a 'simple' person and it happened to me, so I guess I was just trying to warn others but got my facts wrong. Either way they took money from me and I wasn't awareuntil I checked.

ROFL....quality. Not heard someone use that as an insult since school lol

So, did the OP:

A. Sign up for Amazon prime, and not read what they are signing up for?
B.Get signed up for Amazon prime because Amazon made opting in the default setting?
Edited by: "thesaint" 11th May 2012

Amazon are the best company.

If you don't even use prime and sign up by mistake or forgot to cancel after one month trial they refund you providing you haven't used prime after the trial is up.

it took my partner 2months to get a refund from amazon for a faulty, locked up HTC incredible S (only 3 months old) they said they would send a cheque "within" 4 weeks, after 5 weeks no chq arrived and then they told her she had to wait a few more weeks to make sure a chq hadnt been sent, then after all that she had to wait another 4 weeks for the second cheque which again didnt arrive. what a balls up, why they couldn't pay the money into her account direct i do not know. Oh yes I do, extra interest on £2-£300.

I caught it the day it happened I did not even order anything and they said I was a prime member. The wanted me to use the trail. I wanted to know how. They blamed me. I did not do anything or buy anything HOW could it me me. I want it removed they would not remove it at first. I had to contact them 2 times. Now even though I was a prime member for only 2 days and never used it, I will never be aloud a free trail. They pushed this on me before the holidays. Fraud, I say. I will never use prime and will try to shop else. and only use them as a last resort. Don't know why they let this happen. I even asked if they could give me a new account incase someone hacked it. Micro mange they cant let the reps think because they underpay them. hopefully more people will learn that your only a number to amazon.

Well I'm glad after 2.5yrs, you've posted to this thread to let us know...

**Applause**

Posting after two whole years gave me, a new surfer, the end of a story. Information relative to the first post is useful after one day or one year. Far more useful than starting 100 new threads with the same story with different variables.

I got a letter from Amazon today. Didnt know they were sending personal letters these days as I've never ever had mail from them, just emails by the dozen.
Got a little credit card thingie in letter inviting me to try Prime free for a month.
