I will spend Christmas day mostly on my own but I do not mind

I will meet my sis for lunch at the cemetery, will will have hot soup and a butty with Mother then I will go home watch the Queen and prob have a port and listen to Christmas carols it will be a nice relaxing day

On my tod here too, first Christmas following a bereavement this year.

Do need a spot of quiet with nothing happening, in strange way, I'm looking forward to a couple of days of peace,

Miles you can be in a room full of people and feel alone.

I think you've got the right attitude by seeing it as a nice relaxing day.

I hope the weather is kind to you and your sister when you visit your mother.

We have quiet Christmas's nowadayd but when the children were small we had a house full of relatives whom whilst you love them, it can cause a lot of stress.

Peace and happiness on what is only one day.

    amen to that.miles 136

We have a lot of elderly neighbours and some have relatives come to them at Christmas, some go away to stay with family and some will be alone. Those that are alone have refused offers to come over but always welcome my wife who will call round and spend a little time with them. She'll take round small gift for them or something for their dog and will return with home made food or chocolates.

A lot of people are fine on their own but enjoy having a short visit from a neighbour/friend so they know they are not forgotten.

Years ago where we used to live she used to organise a walk to the park with neighbours and children to let all the kids let off steam instead of being stuck indoors. It gave the older relatives a break indoors!

I always tell people this: It seems strange that half the country can't keep it together for a few hours on xmas day and end up fighting with relatives over the television remote or some other trivial matter that's been brewing all year. Yet on the other hand most people on their own would probably gives their eyes teeth to be in their place and celebrating Christmas with others for a bit of company...

People should remember to chill out and relax on the big day and remember how lucky they are to have others to celebrate with.

I have to endure my family on Christmas Day as I always do the cooking and look forward to Boxing Day when I am on my own and can just slob out with a tin of Quality Street watching some telly with turkey and branston pickle sandwiches for tea.

Luckily I have a couple of good neighbours but if I didn't I'd sure love to come and live close to people like you and your Mrs

Have a wonderful Christmas knowing that you are respected by some

None of us will truly be alone as we can meet up on here (HUKD) on Christmas Day where it will be full of Christmas Cheer and Good Tidings.

anyone in devon or cornwall who wants to meet up....

As a devout Christian, the concept of Christmas leaves me a little bewildered. Well not Christmas itself as I understand that, but the whole commercial, drunk, partying aspect. The majority of people use it as an excuse to have fun and never give a seconds thought to The birth of Christ. Sadly Christmas has a darker side to it - more suicides and the A&E dept will be overwhelmed with drunks. For every positive worldly magical glittery moment, there will be a negative moment for some. Christmas is about the birth of Christ, it's a celebration of his birthday. I decided several years ago to celebrate Christmas as a Christian and not a pagan . Trying to be on my own has been difficult and even this year, the neighbours are expecting me to show my face for dinner. Don't worry about being on your own, most people are lonely in life even though they have others around them. They use Christmas to deaden their misery, only to find it does not work, so seven days later they celebrate New Years eve and then on the 2nd of January go back to feeling deflated and not getting the True Christmas Spirit - which is a season in the Church .
I am looking forward to coming on here and spending time by myself, but always remembering that Christmas is about Christ - not Santa...... It's not about getting disappointed or being alone.

Although I agree with the main aspect of your comment about Christmas being too commercialised and is a Christian religious "festival" I want to add my two penneth

Having spent over 3 years in a predominantly Catholic Christian country (The Philippines) whereby the main purpose of Christmas is the "9 nights" whereby for 9 (very early morning) Christians will go to church just because it's Christmas but the rest of the year will mostly find any lame excuse to skip Sunday Mass and then use Chistmas as a chance to drink as much alcohol as they can consume whilst playing music so loud neighbours a street away wouldn't need to play their own music but do anyway and causing all sorts of nuisance - if that's the sort of celebrations Catholic Christians enjoy thank "whoever" I'm an atheist"

I also assume that this form of Christian celebration is not just in The Philippines but also in South Americas where Christianity has it's foothold.

For many years in the UK Christmas has been a time for children and for family gatherings not just for faiths.

Christmas has been a time for children and for family gatherings not just for faiths

oO I agree with you, I am not going to justify that behaviour. I am a Catholic and do celebrate the whole season and it is Christmas for longer than 24 hours for me, which does make it strange to me that others celebrate it on one day alone. It is nice that families get together, but they can do that any time of the year. As, for it being a time children, I disagree. I will be going to Asda later and will see more people spending time on getting too much food and way too much alcohol. I was a child who had everything I wanted, but after Christmas, there were plenty of children who didn't get what they wanted. The same is true today. I love kids to get excited and enjoy the tinsel and sparkle of Father Christmas, but I am talking here from an adult perspective, and for people being on their own. I really don't want a fat man dressed in a red suit visiting me christmas eve. I'll be on a charge if he does!

For part of the day Miles i will be doing the same but i will be placing gifts on my Daughters grave

You've been "following" me omg omg.... ah it's OK

I had 20 years of true love and happiness and who knows maybe I need to payback with 20 years of crap. I'm no saint, I've made mistakes and sometimes misunderstood. If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time (stop singing it) I would but I'd still end up the same person with the same heartache, the same tears but I'm still here surviving. AND there are people across the world who are in a far worse situation than me.

From an atheist (I do hope people understand the meaning/sentiment) - for those who take time out to even just think about others, whether family, friends, the elderly or those that suffer God bless you and hope your Christmas is filed with love and happiness.

Got to go...... something in my eye

Stranger from the Internet round for Xmas dinner...you'd be lucky if you didn't end up being the Xmas dinner!

In all seriousness....I have read this thread and its reminded me I'm lucky to have my family to spend Xmas day with, so I'm not going to stress out this year, just enjoy it, as has been said, there are plenty who would love to spend it with someone.
