Messi for me, best player in the world by a long shot. Can't believe people even put Rooney in the same category.

    Agreed.

Rooney really is a great player... but not fit to tie Messi's boots. I don't think the gulf between potential candidates to the crown "best player" has ever been so wide.

I watched all the matches in the unbelievable 8 goals in 8 days and it really was some of the best football I've ever seen. It elevated the beautiful game to actually be beautiful.

I do wish the commentators would stop noisily ejaculating over him every time he does something wondrous though, it gets in the way of my noisy ejaculation!

Messi everyday or the week best player ever

No way, Messi has not proved himself on the biggest stage of all, when he has he will be in the same league as Maradona.

And I think Rooney is ahead of Messi too, over the season he is much better, Messi has a couple of good games and bang he's in the headlines again.

I know the goals and games you refer. I watchd them also. Though I remarked if perhaps it may have been Messi ejeculating after the first goal last week end, where he went over to a bank of photographers, lifted his shirt at the front and doing something in front of the cameras down below. I did think he was just being boastful....... but now I wonder where his name comes from!

    Man U fan?

What is the biggest stage in the world? The World Cup? I don't think you have to do something great at a World Cup to be the greatest. The standard of football is never that high in Internationals anyway and it's just a few games every 4 years.

lol... no I'm not, I just appreciate a player who does it on the big stage (world cup) and week in week out. Messi comes across as a more skillful player granted but given the choice it would be Rooney all day long for me.

Messi is by far the best player in the world at the moment, but is playing in one of (if not, the) best team in the world. Rooney is playing in a far tougher league though, and is head and shoulders the best player in it this season. Would be interesting to see how Messi coped in the Premier League, and vice versa with Rooney.

It's scary to think that he's so one-footed though.... imagine what he would be like if he could use his right foot too :w00t:

It's always going to be a subjective thing. As an England supporter I would happily trade in Rooney for Messi, in fact I'd happily trade in most of our 'big' players just for Messi!

We will never know will we, the 2 best players in the world (at the time) have never played in the same league at the same time have they?

I don't think Messi has the same consistency as Rooney has / will have.

Rooney is good, but nowhere near Messi!!

Many thought Man Utd would struggle when they sold 'the best player in the world' and just have Rooney. Guess SAF was right, or lucky.

That's the beauty of football, it's not black and white. There's 40,000 managers inside each stadium most weekeends.

Like most comparison's of 'best of all time' in anything the top competitors rarely play alongside each other to compare. The World cup is one of the few occasions you see them.

You can't say Rooney has been more consistent the past couple of years can you. He may very well be in future but that's speculating.

Huh? What has Rooney done at the World Cup apart from get sent off and get his team knocked out as a result? And I think the Champions League final is a big stage and Messi scored unlike Rooney. Rooney is a decent player but Messi is definitely better than him and I'm not looking forward to us having to stop him on Wednesday although I'm confident we can.

^^ From the start of the season to the very end I still think Rooney is a better player.

Until they play in the same league, and probably for the same team you cannot state for a fact who is better.

Just my opinion, I think the EPL is a much harder league the La liga, (something Ronaldo seems to agree with))

I wasn't on about Rooney, we were talking about Maradona at that point.

Then I probably agree, but Messi's only 22 and if he keeps improving like he has he could be the best ever, but there are players like Ronaldinho and Kaka who have reached their peak at a relatively early age and now despite not being too old they aren't as good as they used to be. I don't know how much more he can improve though, it will just be if he can maintain this level of consistency throughout the next few years.

Maradona for me just now - that Hand of God thing and the way the English still cry about it, still makes me chuckle.

Just be thankful that Scotland will never have to face Messi in a competitve match.

Ronaldo is better then rooney and messi!

Its too hard to tell between these 2 players, remember its not all about goals. Assists and the influence a player has on the team is important aswell

Most people here have only seen Messi play once or twice, unless you watch Barcelona play you cannot really tell Messi's influence he has for them.

Rooney has a better defensive and influential role than Messi, whereas Messi's dribbling would be better. Too hard to decide but as i haven't seen enough of Messi, i would have to go for Rooney.

Also back to the OP, cannot tell between maradona or messi as i haven't seen alot from either of them

messi, for Me, is a player who'll be remembered in his own right. I personally think tevez will be the argies star man - and he resembles donner in many ways.

as it is, argentina should coast to jo'burg and reign supreme - they'll surely replace donner and with the attack consisting of messi and tevez, not to be frowned.

argentina v portugal should be the ideal final - what better way for the top 2 players in the world to stake their claim as the best.

I think we'd take him on penalties - as long as we didn't have a man sent off.
