    Mathematics Degree Questions

I'm applying to do a maths degree this year (to start in 2010) so I am currently trying to make myself as good as possible.

I am confident I have achived 4 A grades in my AS Levels this year, definately 3, physics maybe a mark or two off an A but a high B if not. I will be picking up Further Maths next year & dropping Chemistry.

I have started a qualification which is basically hoosing a subject & doing a projectg on it. I'm doing something maths related. It is the equivelent to an AS Level. I am also doing an Advanced maths qualification next year which some Uni's accept instead of their entrance exams.

So I am doing quite alot but for anyone that has been accepted onto or done a maths degree, what sort of things did you do? Any good books which could be read or work which could be done?

The Universities I am looking at are Oxford, Durham, Warwick, Bath & Bristol. These may change slightly though when I look into them more.

    Cheers
    James

I dont know much about mathematics books , but when I was younger i found maths in the classroom Quite stressful but I relieved this tention with the help of a copy of Playboy:whistling:

Yeah, I have 12 books from college which I'm scanning through and my spare time is being spent going over the last year as thats what Oxfords entrance exam is based on. Only worried as I didnt take further maths in the first year so will only have it to AS where as most people will have it to A2, oh well, will see what happens...

It looks to me as if you're already doing the right things.

Just some thoughts from a retired science teacher ( me!!):
Oxbridge pretty much go by their own interviews and exams - the trick is in getting to that stage.
Did you take the Maths GCSE's early? What is your 4th AS subject and why didn't you take the second maths AS if you see maths as your degree? These are the thoughts that will be going through the Admissions tutors minds at the elite unis you list. Would you say that you are outstanding at Maths? Which aspects of the subject fascinate you? Try to select a project which will excite you and not just tick the 'doing the extra stuff' box.

I think there are quite a few on here who have done/are doing maths degrees, hopefully they'll pop in with some more specific advice.
    Good luck.:-D

If you wanted my two pennies I would aim to do the whole A-level further maths next year if you wanted a shot with oxbridge.

The other unis should be ok with what you are currently doing.

my gf did an economics degree at Warick and she hadn't even done maths!

Good luck and what do you want to do as a profession?
