48÷2(9+3) = ?

hasn't someone recently posted the same sum on misc yesterday?

Im sure people said either 24 or 288

I posted this yesterday, thread got removed.

old meme is old.

I thought it was you but checked your thread and couldn't see it lol

isnt it.. or would that be 48/(2(9+3))
.. ive got lost in the brackets.. its been too long

EDIY: ive just clicked on the meme link think.. i see its meant to be confusing!!

Original Poster

According to BODMAS

48÷2(9+3)
48 / 2{12) BRACKETS
...............ORDER
24(12)......DIVISION
288..........MULTIPLICATION
................SUBTRACTION

So 288 is what i get.

just noticed i've used this vvv (taken from DG's link)

If one uses multiplication before division (PEMDAS being especially popular in the United States), the problem would be solved like this:

48 ÷ 2 * (9+3)=
48 ÷ 2 * (12)=
48 ÷ 2 * 12=
48 ÷ 24=
2

2 was the answer according to the first law of JOEPROSHO

48 ÷ 2 * (9+3)=
2

purely because its a bit quicker in my head to do 24/12 than 24*12

BUT...............according to First Law of Marina, the answer can also be 288 as explained by peodude and verified by MS Excel.

im sorry your law does not even appear in capitals so it is clearly inferior just on these grounds oO

I always got taught it was the BODMAS way as peodude said

But you're law is not capitalised, on that grounds it doesn't qualify as a law at all, sorry. X)

i think i did aswell... but im in too deep now

uve confused me well and truly lol

48÷2(9+3) =
????
profit

uve confused me well and truly lol

Yay X)

I meant capitalized like this >>> First Law of Marina

Now i'm confused

16. It's the tangent multiplied by the cosin.
So - (48x3(27^(1/3)) = 32-(8/2)
Pretty obvious really to anyone with even a basic grasp of algebra.

Simples... 288.

According to this

oop i meant capatilised as a ficticious accronym! im with you now

i prefer my question of impossible numbers however but dislike the answer i got from miscers on here,

the sqrt of -4?

the answer i got was 2i....

which basically means 2 * sqrt -1!! (i think) basically means a whole bloom mini equation in its own right! i prefer it just being an impossible both plus and minus number

the way it's written the answer is surely 2.

if you want the answer of 288 it should be written (48/2)*(9+3)

another way to look at it is 48*1/(2(9+3))

zurich

i dont understand why you have 48*1.. seems a little unecessarry

Bodmas numpty for the win.
where is he??

just trying to say that multiplication and division are equivalent operations, if you see what i mean.

hmm makes more sense now i suppose, think youve the same way of thinking as me in my first post towards it

seriously.....this thread again and seriously the same maths wars again!

ive been here the whole time but must have missed the war.... plus its a first time discussion for me both ways can be correct dependant upon which methods u apply and favour, simple!

sorry guys....im being mean as im on a diet.....lack of food makes me evil!

Who would pay any attention at all to some New World rejig?
As MB so eloquently says - BODMAS for the win!

MB - re diet - eat eggs - they fill you up!

Just wait a sodding minute! You want a question that goes with the answer 42? Well, how about what's six times seven? Or how many Vogons does it take to change a lightbulb? Here's one! How many roads must a man walk down?
