    Mazda RX8

    Hi all,

Ok I'm thinking of getting me a Mazda Rx8 on the weekend. I really like the look and the practicality of the car. But reading some reviews its seems there is a problem with the engine. Some reports say it floods in the winter (or when it rains quite badly) and other reviews say once the car is switched you can't switch it off straight away? is this is all true...Like how long does the car need to be on for?

Any sort of advice or hints and tips in regards to the RX8 would be greatly appreciated!

Rep left for all help as usual!

    Thanks

yeah i read about the oil and mpg. And its kind of expected as it is a sports car.

But the fact that you cant switch it off soon after switching it on (wont be able to use the car if i want to go down the road to shop or anything:x) and the engine flooding is what is really worrying me!

    From parkers.co.uk/car…spx

Pro's - Unique style, good performance, rear-hinged doors, four useable seats

Con's - Rotary engine needs to be worked hard and is thirsty as a result

R32 is quite common. The RX8 is just a unique car which i am in love with

They have, or are very soon, releasing the new model RX8. Supposedly its looks better, performs better and can eat up more tarmac before you have to fill the tank again.... Not sure how good it actually is though :?

    Get a VW Scirocco

its a wankle engine, rotary gears, think of a spirograph but a bit more complex, it uses a shedload of oil and you need to get it serviced more than you're average car.

Cheers mate, been on that website. But as mentioned in my original there two factors that really worry me. The car gets alot of positive ratings. But those 2 issues have come up a couple of times!

As far as i know you can switch it off and on/on and off when you like... i think if you've taken it on a motorway drive then when you're off the motorway you shouldn't really turn the car off straight away, you should let it idle for a bit.
Engine flooding doesnt happen with every car, only a small amount have had that problem.
Best thing would be to still buy one which is under the manufacturer warranty, that way if things do go wrong then they'll probably happen soon but at least you'll be covered.

But the whole thing about the rx8 is that is not an average car. And comparing to other sports cars it mpg etc is not too bad! I have an old school bmw 320i coupe and i get about 20mpg or so!

oh man now I'm so confused. Part of me saying no to the car. but then parts of me is saying go for it! Dont know what to do!!!!!!! Errghhh!!!!!!!!!!

needs to have the front debadged though. Normally i think debadged cars look tacky, but the stupid little VW symbol on the scirocco just seems out of place. The front would look more menacing if it was gone.

I was looking into an RX8 a while ago ....

    But thought better of it.......

Just going on what my mate said (he's into cars) he said the problem is that if you stall the engine in an rx8 when the engine hasnt warmed up properly then you have to get towed to the garage and have it drained?

hmmmmmm.......now this is what i was scared to hear!!!! how embarrasing would that be.....stalling the car and the getting it towed....espcially if its an RX8

ok so like i mentioned im quite confused. It seems the people in this conversation know fair bit about cars. So if you were to spend about £6,000 on a car what would you all get?????

All depends on what you're looking for.... a sports coupe?
With the RX8 its a hit or miss, most people buy it and get a perfectly working machine that doenst have to many glitches. It just costs more to maintain then an average car.
Some people a dodgy RX8 and end up having to spend a lot to get it fixed or have to sell it.
... If it was me, i would take the risk.

Was you going to buy an Rx8 for £6k?

I love the RX8, my mate has got the 230bhp version, amazing car
uniqe infact with its rotary engine,

great family sports, with the 4 usable seats

it is a thirsty car 25mpg, but its sooo worth it.

hmmmm.....yeah i really want to take the risk. I want a sports coupe and there is something about the RX8 that i just love. But then reading reviews etc. Its put major doubts in my mind. Well i need to decide by the weekend. As i want my new car for when i start my new job. Dont want to go to my job in a bmw (AKA the rattle snake) that rattles loads! I saw a nice little porsche boxster as well for around 6500...so could be another option!

A 2000 X-reg BMW M5. They've dropped a lot recently and you can get a pretty immaculate one for around that price now.
If I hadn't bought a 3 series in April it's what I'd spend my money on right now. Make sure you get a manual though ;-)

    Abz;3574631

Nice, very nice. Dont think i'd get one of those in my budget!

Did it let you view all the pics?

The mpg and depreciation costs really put me off the mazda, plus the dull looks inside.

    Not a Porsche!
    Unless it's a Cayman S then you're allowed!

    Whats your budget?
Do you really need 4 seats?
How about the 350Z? they are going dirty cheap now for one a year or two old with under 40K miles. AM tempted to get the missus one in March or a Lexus SC430.

Due to credit crunch there are some seriously nice cars out there for silly money, I was looking at a AMG CLS at the weekend, cost the original owner over 80K, 2 years old 32K on the clock, and I could have got the car for 18K !!!!!!!!

yeah there is one going round my area, a black one i think it was a 54 plate with 50k on the clock. Black and red leather interior full service history etc for 6k :)....a bit of a bargain. As loads of people say its definately a buyers market right now
