You can't really use your Xbox 360 as a media center, but if you build or buy a dedicated media center PC running Windows MCE then you can use your 360 as an extender. Basically, this means that you can watch live TV and recorded shows on your 360, as long as your media center PC is on.

Building a media center PC is the same as building a regular PC, except for the fact that you generally want to buy components that are as quiet as possible. As long as you aren't a complete beginner, building a PC is a fairly straight-forward process; although you will probably want a friend with some experience to check over your spec before you buy all the components, in case you've picked something that won't work. That said, you might be better off just buying a ready-made PC - it depends how comfortable you feel really.

What do you plan on using the media center for? If you just want to record a few programmes you might be better off getting a PVR or something similar.

ive got an original xbox hooked up to my big screen for this purpose. i put xbmc on it and stream over my films that are on my pc. think i read in a thread on here somewhere that someones does the same with there 360 socould be done maybe

if that can be done with the 360 i might do that if not is it worth getting a new pc?

have you got a computer you can hook up to your tv already? If so put it on and see if you like using your computer for this purpose. If you do then its worth looking into. you can get a lot of functionality for your entertainment system in one neat tidy box if you go down this line.

saying that if your xbox manages to do this then give it a try on that. I like windows media centre and I use it with one of the remotes. very handy.

Most people use media center's and use them as a PVR to record and watch TV (like Sky+ can do) or record two channels to watch later etc.

If you use Windows MCE or Vista (any version above basic) you can then use the MCE for rip[ping dvd's to your PC them wathcing them and storing them in a gallery, accessing all your music (stored on your PC) and also you can view files.

I mostly use mine for watching things like lost etc on my normal widescreen tv rather then my monitor.

I think media centers are good. I wish sky would allow me to ditch thier Set Top Box and have one in the computer to keep everything in a nice small little package.
