ok my son has had a couple of days off school due to his left eye being swollen and weepy when he woke, i first suspected conjuctivitis, we saw a doctor but later in the day and the swelling had passed and didnt look too bad....doctor said not conjunctivitis as no stickiness, or hayfever as hayfever would be both eyes, we were given a prescription to get incase conj 'evolved' and told it might just be irritated.

he has also had a couple of nose bleeds in the past week or so

this morning he has woke with both eyes being swollen, still no stickiness so i dont think its conj, im baffled, has anyone had similar to this?

and yes we will see the doctor again before anyone complains about asking on a forum and not a professional!

Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis

Well I thought same thing a couple weeks ago,but he was sneezing a lot so figured it must be hayfever.Sore puffy eyes cleaed up and that w/e apprantly been very high pollen count.
I went GP a few days and been giving some syrup,it was either that or nasal spray and I don't think that would gone down too well with the spray.

S.A.C. very different to normal conjunctivitis and usual treatments and ointments dont work. Are the eyes constantly weepy? crusty in mornings?

he should be allergen tested as it may be enviro or in food that he has allergy , has he ate anythin that has just come into season lately , or milk or eggs , i see quite a lot of patients when it comes into the spore time of season and all flowers start to bloom , maybe flowers new in house or so
have you changed bed clothes recently new soap powder or so on pillows

Maybe try another doctor?

lots of weeping, swollen, itchy and bloodshot, no stickiness, tends to get better as the day goes on.... doctor ruled out hayfever as it was just one eye...but now its both

It is a variant of conjunctivitis.

Sneezing about 30-40 times a day,he's not had any of the syrup yet, going try it this weekend, says may cause drowsiness,so can't be having it if he at school if he gets this side effect.

then I stick to my original prognosis

Necromil Sodium 2% eye drops (AKA Rapitil). 1 to 2 drops in each eye as required. (prescription ONLY)

Heaviest times are 1st thing in morning and night. Stops when its raining. May want to consider combining it with steroid based anti-hayfever drugs, pill or injection

I would say so, tend to recommend GOLDENEYE Ointment but it will do nothing but sooth the dry skin around the eye a little

yes but I doubt it would do much but stop the sneezing etc, not stop the condition in the eyes

The docs will prob try you on various other eyedrops first, odds are all useless except this one. Best to get it early cause it gets worse and worse

also pull the skin down and have a look under the eye. Any 'stringy' gunk?

always looks worse in the mornings but I'll bet £50 that its S.A.C. Not sure your son will be able to take these eyedrops cause of age, thats up to the Doc but I know they work for me. Mine started about 8 years ago out of nowhere and the drops are the only thing that worked for me after 4 years or going back and forth to the docs. I also get the Kenolog steroid injection but always get the drops just in case.

Has your son been getting little pin-pr!ck (stupid swear filter!) feelings in his eyes?

they will do, but the pin pr!ck feelings would have happened before the swelling etc. They arent constant, just every now and again. For future reference these are the early warning signs its starting. Probably disregarded them before if he'd never had it...same for me, but now I know its starting when it happens. Probably started around April time

the 1st time thats what the docs thought mine was...was very mild. Grows worse as the years go by

it sounds like he is allergic to something honey

are his sinuses infected or blocked at all?

a friends 4yr old daughter has got the same thing happen just one eye has swollen up and she has been told its a stye, although you cant see it, and has been given medication, but failing that has to have it surgically removed.

how about inhaling some hot steam with a towel over his head and a couple of drops of menthol/eucalyptus? Or get him to have a shower with the windows closed and see if the wet heat eases the congestion a little x x

will wash out the pollen a bit but thats it

wont work, though the ointment helps soothe the dry skin that you get as the weepy eyes dry and crack the skin

Lou let me know what happens here (100% I'm right here!), get him to Docs tomorrow, tell them everything you've told me and make them listen...get the drops, bet you'll get it easing straight away but will probs needs steroids too

If SAC then both eyes would have been affected together, allergens would get into both eyes. If infection then normally starts in one eye and goes t the other. Treating with antibacterial eye drops won't do any harm so deffo worth a try

loupomm;5542653

Fucithalamic eye drops would do the trick, treat the kid today and if infected should see an improvement by tomorrow

It will....antibacterial eye-drops do nothing but make it sting and water more, happened to me. Also always starts in my right eye first...then goes to left. I dont think its infecting the other, think its just 1 eye is more susceptable than the other

i will update the thread as soon as he has seen the Dr again.....dunno if connected but he now says he has a sore throat
