    Middle lane hogging on motorways

    Hi everyone

We all drive and congestion in getting bad day by day. When i drive i see lot of people block middle lane specially in the night.
so by LAW if some one is blocking middle lane we have to come to first lane (fast lane )to overtake or we still can overtake from third lane ?

I aways go all the way round then back to inside lane and always check if they have worked out which land there supposed to be driving in

By law you shouldn't undertake in slow lane. You should always overtake in fast lane if someone is hogging middle lane.

I am sure you must go to right of person to overtake by law. Only time you can undertake is if the queue of traffic you are in is moving quicker than the queue of traffic to your right.

    From the Highway Code...

    Rule 267
Do not overtake unless you are sure it is safe and legal to do so. Overtake only on the right. You should

    check your mirrors
take time to judge the speeds correctly
make sure that the lane you will be joining is sufficiently clear ahead and behind
take a quick sideways glance into the blind spot area to verify the position of a vehicle that may have disappeared from your view in the mirror
remember that traffic may be coming up behind you very quickly. Check all your mirrors carefully. Look out for motorcyclists. When it is safe to do so, signal in plenty of time, then move out
ensure you do not cut in on the vehicle you have overtaken
be especially careful at night and in poor visibility when it is harder to judge speed and distance.

    Rule 268
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

Overtake then move back and slow down, if they try to overtake, move over so they can't. Make sure you're inches away from their bumper a lot and flash your lights like you're a 70s strobe light.

Don't that's more dangerous is potentially is going to cause an accident.

I hate middle lane hoggers but last week coming home from the NEC bike show I came across something even worse. A driver hogging the third lane of four. She must have had half a mile of clear road in front of her. It really held the road up. This country needs to educate motorway drivers instead of spending billions of pounds widening certain motorways. While theres middle lane drivers congestion will always be a problem. It needs more policing, fines and points handed out. A sure the cost of a police officer and a car could easily be made up in fines.

I heard someone saying that the police were supposed to be clamping down on middle lane Hoggers!
Must be easier texting when you're in the middle lane , better reception maybe!

Driving on motorway on Monday I was behind a blonde girl, 20/25 at a guess, in middle lane. There was a car coming up behind me in third lane so I flashed about 10 times quickly (I could have been police) so that I wouldn't have to slow down and she didn't move, so I sped up to overtake before the car in third lane got to me. As I went past I used my horn and looked across, she didn't react at all, these are the drivers who cause serious crashes.

What police? I rarely see them on the motorways nowadays. They have all been replaced with fixed cameras and highway officers.
The motorways with 4 lanes seem to cause most confusion. Very few drivers go into the far left lane.

We could go all day on this one.
How about people who turn fog lights on the second the clocks go back without a sniff of fog in the air?

Idiots on the motorway who use full beam regardless of the fact they can see anyone's rear or headlights whatsoever.
Interesting fact, you never ever need to use full beam on a motorway anyway , all white lines and cats eyes are clearly visible in the road well ahead of you at all times and no need ever to put on your stupid full beams on ever-simple.

I don't particularly care about the middle lane, people treat it as just another lane for their journey. What really irks me, are people doing 70 or under in the fast lane and causing a huge amount of congestion. There is literally nothing you can do with these people since you're not allowed to overtake inside. You can flash them and hope they move to another lane, but that's all.

I think you have your first and third lanes mixed up.

think you all need to resit your driving course. no such thing as slow or fast lane... unless you can provide a reference from highway code.

I'm guessing you are one of those audi or bmw drivers

There is no such thing as fast or slow lanes. The speed limit (unless otherwise directed) is the same for cars in all three lanes. The 2 outside lanes are over taking lanes. You should move back to the left once you have safely completed the move.
Lots of (seemingly) bad drivers in thus thread and lots of bad advice.

If you have been in lane 1 predominately and through maintaining speed catch up with a car in lane 2 who is hogging at 65 etc, it's perfectly legal to continue in lane 1 without the need to "overtake" and pass the car, without any over the top moves into lane three then back to one.

If however, you've moved from lane in order to "under-take" then this is where the action can be used to support a driving offence which is usually "driving without due care" as undertaking is no an offence in itself.

In the Highway Code, things that are specifically against the law are always "must not". "Do not" and "should not" are advisory (though of course it's good advice that you should always bear in mind).

So to answer OP's question directly, since he/she asked whether it is against the law to not move to the "fast lane" before overtaking... no, but if anything happens I imagine not following the Highway Code's advice would probably count against you.

Typical. Was it you in the third lane? Most likely not. Did you see any of this. Most likely not. There was plenty of room for me to speed up and overtake . My point is why should I have to slow down, this is more dangerous than me taking control of the situation as there could have been someone behind me.

I overtake on the right, flash my lights behind them first, bib the horn when passing and give them an erm, wave

I think it's pretty obvious that when people refer to the "fast lane" it's in regards to the right-most, overtaking lane. But I suppose you couldn't help but be pedantic.

No, they aren't on the M69!!

I like driving in the US... Houston is great, 8-lane freeways, you can overtake or undertake. At traffic lights, on a junction, you can turn on a red - as long as it is clear.

so please tell me why do they call it a fast lane when all the lanes have the same speed limit... ohh wait is it because incompetent drives dont obey any laws on the outside lane? its funny how people who call it fast lane usually drive 80-90+mph, flash other drivers that are overtaking at 70mph, or tailgate

I always wondered why steering wheels are designed with a larger gap in the top side.
that was until I overtook those forward sitting, steering wheel peering, selfish, thoughtless, do-gooder, "well if I'm doing 70 blah blah blah" lane hoggers.

    - rant over

I rarely bother moving around lane hoggers these days. I just stay in lane 1 and continue my journey. If they are too stupid/unobservant to to move into lane 1 then that's their problem. You may argue it's not safe to do that, but they aren't being safe by staying in the middle of the motorway. Lane hogging causes congestion, and congestion increases the risk of accidents.
