    not necessarily

the stereo has 3 contacts (common - left & right)

the mono has 2 contacts, the contacts for each dont line up at the tip, so you may short 2 channels, it might connect both or it might just connect one channel, or nothing at all, depends really on the socket, some put their contacts in different places, esp the middle extra connector on stereo, basically, best use the correct one for the job, thats why they make them

I am going on a short break in a few weeks to the lakes and i need a laptop dongle? Any ideas what these are, how much they are and who are the best ones?

^^^ Agreed, I'd ask someone from the location you are going to about the local signal before investing in anything.

I have loads of them , how many do you want ??
When we buy the headphones for school , there supplied with them and we dont use or need them . So, you can have a few if you need them . I have now broken up for the half term holidays so wont be back to work till a week come Bank holiday monday , but I think I have 1or 2 here at home . They are 1/4" to 3.5mm adapters ......but I just noticed yours .............it's MONO ............ours are STEREO . No good them .
