Mini Disk Players... (Walkman) -- Found my old ones in the loft..... good times!

Mini Disk Players... (Walkman)

While tidying the loft today I found my old Sharp Mini Disk player and Sony Walkman Mini disk player...

Just charged them both up and listened to a few tracks from the mid to late 90's...

Looking at the tech, its a shame mini disk did never take off as much as it should.. looking at it now, it was a great idea......

Think I will be keeping these for years to come.... (still got all the boxes etc...)

They were too expensive and by the time they dropped in price flash storage was becoming popular and cheaper more quickly. Don't see how they are a good idea compared to flash media ?

When i was buying these.... around 1998 I bet.... I was just "copying" Cd's i owned onto blank mini discs for when out and about or in the car...

The pre-recorded stuff was expensive... but from a walkman point of view it was a good idea as smaller than the CD walkmans..

There was a period of around 2 years where these were been marketed to replace CD's, then came along the CD burner and flash media then these were fogotten...

You cant compare these to flash media as that time it was not around at an affordable cost.

Mini Discs lives on...

I had one of those, in fact i probably had at least one of every model Sony ever made apart from the very latest models before they stopped making them
Used to get them at auction as faulty returns for £2-3 each and sell on ebay for up to £50 each(stating they were faulty and what the fault was)
So yes i agree they were Good times indeed

MDs were cool, but the newer/better technology became mainstream and affordable pretty quickly, so MD got left behind... It was a nice idea though, I liked them. Beat regular CD walkmans hands down.

Cool, my first MP3 player was this thing back in 1999

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/419ZZJ2KCVL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

128mb and about £149

I remember searching everywhere for it - I even asked in Dixons and Currys if they had this MP3 player - they looked at me like I was from another planet LOL

dcx_badass;8506106

Got mine in 2000/early 01. was 64mb, for £70 from Dixons in Scacborough.

Dixons finally caught onto the MP3 format by then! I remember my second MP3 player was a big step up..

The 20gb Nomad Zen in 2001 All of my friends were blown away by it! Got it cheap in the USA too.

How much did that thing cost back in the day? I'm guessing MEGABUCKS..

I had one of these bad boys:

Was the first person in school to have a mp3 player, 48 mb, better than the basic Rio. 1999/early 2000 I guess. Bought from jungle.com for those who remember back then.

Following that I had a Sony MZ-R55 minidisc but didn't leave behind the Soulmate for a while, until I moved onto the Sony mp3 in about 2001 with a massive 64 mb and it was the size of a small pen and was the same size as the sony MD's remote control!

We have come so far.

Looool

48MB version for £99 and a 64MB version for £119

I had this little Minidisc player:

http://www.51erji.com/bbs/attachments/Panasonic%20SJ-MJ70_5osIiaKSoSd7.jpg

Even though it was pricey I don't regret buying it, aside from being an incredibly small and sleek device at the time mp3 players were poor, portable CD players were big and cassette players were poor quality and had to be wound. Eventually changed to a Siemens SL45 for mpl3 playback, one of the first phones with removable storage:

http://ixbtlabs.com/articles/siemenssl45/siemens_sl45_mp3.jpg

I use a Clip+ now, makes it all the more impressive that it can pack in 24GB at the moment.

I love mini disks, they just feel nice to hold, they were great for taking to gigs, sweet talking the sound guy and getting a bootleg copy of the gig as well :P

I had both of them! The top one was my first large capacity mp3 player. Before that I had a cheap nasty one that had no built in storage but used an sd card...which at the time the largest I think was about 64mb!
From the bottom one I went on to this:
http://images.gittigidiyor.com/2282/Creative-Zen-Portable-Media-Center-20-GB__22829187_0.jpg
Which was awesome having video as well and a good sound with the built in speakers! Was damn heavy even back then really.

Now I've got my 80gb iPod Classic, and not to jump on the 'apple bandwagon' as my girlfriend, now fiancee, bought me and herself one. Although I dont use it as much now as most phones have got pretty good built in music chips now and large capacity memory cards are not that expensive. But when we go on holiday or I'm on a long train journey it still gets used.
If the iPod was to ever break, I'd consider another, but probably end up getting a Cowan.

On the MD chat...I still have a JVC MD stereo, and it was a funky stereo as well. I use to record my cds to MD through it and use it on my personal Sony MD player...which I paid £5 for at a car boot as the guy said it didn't work...took it home borrowed a MD from a mate and it worked fine!

I don't know creative went seriously down hill at one point...don't how they stand today.
I bought my brother a Sony one for Christmas and it rocks, the firmware on it is super fast and the SQ is awesome as well.

But yeah the Cowon would get my vote if I had to buy a new one.

Jungle.com! Totally forgot about them... Didn't Argos buy them?

I bought one of these bad boys from Jungle.
