    Mini DV Help

I've got a Panasonic NV-GS27EB and had it since Feb and not had a problem with it, however it's started playing up lately. I've just got back from Lanzarote where I recorded a fair bit of my nippers, when I orginally watched anything back on the LCD it seemed ok. Since I got home and went to transfer it to my computer the audio and video skips alot which is annoying, it does this on the camera play back, and it only starts doing it half way through the tape. If I do a new recording it does the same picture is skippy (sorta misses frames) same goes with audio. Do the heads need cleaned or is there a fault with my camera?

    TIA for any help

I think it's the tape that's failing. Reason I think this is that we know it's not the recording itself that's the problem because the issue manifests with both the Lanzarote and the new recording, it's not a software issue because the issue manifests on both the camera and on the PC, and it's (probably) not a hardware issue with the camera because the problem only manifests at a certain part of the tape.

If you've got one, try a different tape in it. If the issue remains, check with Panasonic before cleaning the heads. I don't know how sensitive to damage the heads on your camera will be, but I wouldn't want you to risk the warranty if it's not something Panasonic recommend doing, since a warranty replacement would be the next step if two tapes show the same fault.

But, yeah. New tape, and it should be fine. They do degrade over time, and in digital video, skipping is a sign of data corruption.

Well I chanced my luck, went to currys with the camera, showed the fella he tried it in a different camera whole tape worked fine. Fella advised buying a head cleaning cassette for £15 and if that didn't work return both them and he'd chnage the camera and refund the money for the head cleaner. The head cleaner didn't work so took the camera back got a newer model as they didn't have the older one a new 1 year warranty and thr £15 back for the head cleaner. Tape transferred ok to PC also. Result.

    Thanks for all the help/suggestions.

I had a similar problem last year with my Panasonic MX8. The cleaning tape didn't do a thing, so I contacted Panasonic and they arranged a repair, which I had to pay for (the camera is 6 y/o now).
