Minority Report ... flawed or not?

Found 22nd Jun 2009
Having an argument with my brother about Minority Report, could do with some help to counter his argument, haven't watched it for a long time and can't really remember it,but I'm sure my brother must be wrong.
Here's what he posted :-

Okay, so The Minority Report is on tonight, one of the best sci-fi films ever...apparently. Tom Cruise plays a cop who uses a pre-cog to see a crime happen in the future and then stops it before it does. Now tell me if I'm wrong, but, If he STOPS the crime before it happens......HOW the hell do the pre-cogs see the crime happen........Flaw in this film, me thinks?

Any help in shutting him up gratefully received,I did try google but that wasn't much help,I still didn't know what I was talking about.....

This was on last night - BBC1 I think

Your flaw in a fictional film is not that time travel or future time viewing is possible, but that it would alter time to then change it? You're missing the vital problem here.

Agreed 100%

Alternate reality. Solves the grandfather problem too.

I don't know fully what he has said, but the fact of the matter is that the concept of the film is made up, therefore you have to ignore the reality.

Sorry to be so negative, but I thought it was an over acted over rated film.

Good answer ..

Simple if you have gained an understanding of time travel from Back to the Future, otherwise not a great deal of use.

Indeed - if the OP had done the temporal mechanics module at Starfleet academy they'd know the answer to this one...:w00t:

Or try and get your head round this

Considering this is not time travel and it's exactly how I described it in the film, I'm not sure why you replied with that :whistling:

Did anyone else notice the wonderful twist at the end.

..was it really as happy an ending as we would like to think, or did it all happen in his head whilst he was incarcerated?

It's a sci-fi film, you can't really complain that the concept the film is based around doesn't currently exist - the ability to see the future is a belief that has been held for many years such as prophets in the past. Minority Report takes the idea that certain people can actually see glimpses of the future even though the actual mechanic for this cannot be understood or replicated. It eventually turns out the system isn't foolproof and has to be taken apart.

What's particularly interesting is that while we don't know people who can accurately predict the future (or a possible future) and we cannot record image/videos from people's minds we do still have similar situations occurring in our current life where science is over-relied upon to get convictions which aren't necessarily right. This is known as the 'CSI effect' where jurors are swayed by sophisticated high tech systems which have been overstated and are not necessarily accurate, as in Minority Report this should provide a starting point which can then be backed up (or not) with proper evidence but people have actually been convincted on shaky grounds where much of the work has been highly hypothetical.

Oh dear....

It's not a flaw in the film - IT'S THE POINT OF THE FILM.

The same applied to time travel and future time viewing. It works how you said it does if you take your learning from Back to the Future. If you have a bit more of an understanding, you can go a bit further.

You're discussing a THEORY. There is no right or wrong.

Since Time Travel is only theoretically possible, noone actually knows what would happen. Who's to say that if a someone had the power of precognition that it would show all events or just the events as they stood on a linear plane? There are also arguments AGAINST paradoxial events, stating that it would more than likely spawn a parallel dimension (again, all theories).

There are many different theories on the subject and to denounce one over someone else's is just pointless.
