This is going to sound a little like a sales pitch, but at the minute all the other outlets offer nothing I'd say is worth the time of day at the prices on offer. Most importantly consider the screen sizes here because there are a range in my suggestions. I would also read the listings fully as I'm only looking at specifications quickly here and I can and do miss stuff so be sure to check before you buy.

I would say about the idea of picking up a small sized desktop as you'll get a lot more performance and you can pick up a cheap second hand screen for very little these days. So worth considering that route (you will get a heck of a lot more for your money).

Starting with my best suggestion, it's an ultraportable elitebook so built like a tank (you can literally stand on top of one of these things and it won't be bothered by it), advantages here are 3rd Gen i5 processor, acceptable RAM and biggest plus of an SSD which will really mean a lot in terms of performance. Downside being out of budget.

Next up is a model that's not much different to the last one pretty much the same basic looks and just as rugged. The processor is not an ultraportable one so not as good for battery life but in it's favour it will be a little bit faster. Downsides being it's got a traditional hard drive that's a lot bigger than the previous model. Another key down side is that the processor is a year older than the one above so the machine itself might be a year older too but I've got machines 4 or 5 years older than this still running fine so don't let it be a major decider. Personally if it was my money I'd go for the model above.

This is basically a good processor, acceptable levels of ram, reasonable screen size and acceptable hard disk space. But again, lacks SSD for faster load times and so on. I've been using a similar machine day to day for a good while now and it's pretty solid

Finally, my outside choice, half the budget price, no real warranty but for that you get, 3rd Gen i3 processor (more than sufficient for basic office use, acceptable hard disk space, a working laptop with windows 7 running on it. Key down sides are, unknown battery life (so it might literally die when the power does) and 2gb of RAM, this is not a lot of RAM, but if all you do is go on email, type basic documents up with nothing fancy going on or like many people do, open the internet and load a single website up at a time then this could be a great option, it will have a good quality keyboard and a few minor dings but it will work. If you need to £10 will double the ram to an acceptable level (less if you're careful) and it's easy to fit. You will need to buy a power supply, but a universal one or compatible quality model from a decent supplier will cost about £15. For the price, if it breaks in a year you can replace it and still be under budget and that money has been in your pocket for the entire time.

Final point, all of these machines offer an extensive range of replacement parts, both OEM, 3rd party and refurbished. These are cheap and the manuals to guide you through the repairs are easy to get access to. They also have proven track records of being solidly made so things rarely go wrong with them, if it's not dead when you get it then it's unlikely to have die in a fatal way for a good number of years.

Hi, thanks for your comprehensive response.

If a few people say its a good deal, it must be so I don't mind spending a bit more to get a good deal.

All day everday go for a LENOVO THINKPAD

Either a T420 or my favourite X230, they are beasts of a machine, I went back to this over my 1K specced out Dell XPS 13 because truthely you need no more and having something that so expensive when the thinkpad is so great just bugged me, Pick one on ebay, Either buy one with SSD on, or buy one with hardrive and upgrade it to ssd yourself its so easy a 10 year old can do it, also the ram too, you can buy it already done but save money doing yourself most likely

    ---

and with phones, the NEW phone market is garbage in the lower markets, your get a much better second hand one from last year, which is much better then a new cheap phone, something like a S6 HTC M9, loads depends on what you prefer personally

Hi thanks. i've managed to bag a laptop spare from work, so don't need one now.

Just hoping to find a new phone under £180. Any suggestions for which one please? I just use whats app, make calls and texts.

For mobile used only for WhatsApp, calls /texts a Moto G 4th gen for around £80 (1GB RAM) will do
If you don't mind Chinese makes a Cubot Dinosaur (3 GB RAM, decent battery) for £100 from Amazon /eBay UK seller will be great and last easily for 18 months at least

I would suggest either a sony experia or Motorola, instead of looking at there new phone that are around 180£ look at there last year phones second hand, the last year phones will beat the new cheaper phones all day, I suggest them too because both softwares are pretty clean and easy to use, both are really good
