Mobile Broadband Pay As You Go - Which deal to go for?

Hi all,

My girlfriend currently uses Virgin Broadband, it's 2 meg and pay about £18 a month. However she hardly ever goes online, and when she does its only for email, facebook and online banking.

So I've been looking at find a Mobile Broadband deal. So I guess we'd like one that;

1. Is cheap for the dongle
2. Get as much allowance per top-up
3. The data doesn't expire after a month, or a short set-time

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm not really up on Wireless Broadband, is it a matter of plugging in the dongle, installing the software and away you go? People have also said that you can put a SIM in the dongle - whats all that about?

Thanks for any advice folks
Richard

Hmm the eBay auction looks a bit risky... I saw the thread about the free 3 dongle, but I'm confused about the terms!

I order the free dongle, and top it up £10 for 1GB is that right? Just top up £10 for every gig?

Get the o2 dongle, Littlewoods Direct were selling it for £10, put a o2iphone sim in it from e bay, about £3 to buy, add £10 credit and you have free internet access for 12 months and the £10 is not used.

More here.

Where's the best place to get the o2 dongle?

I think its only vodafone mobile BB that doesnt expire, we bought one for my dad a few months back cos he goes away once every three months or so, uses very little. All the others seem to expire.

using the o2 iphone sim is a bit risky because i've heard of o2 deactivating them when not used in an iphone.
What i would do is get the £5 3-mobile sim from the link above then theres a loophole to get £5 per month UNLIMITED broadband.
Ok it only lasts 30 days but for that price, a good deal i'd say

Whats the loophole?

'Mobile' Broadband uses the mobile phone data system so the dongle has a sim card in it. Coverage is limited, so if you want to use it the first thing to do is to check whether you can actually get on any of the networks. I think O2, Vodafone, T-mobile, Orange and Three all have their own networks and the others run off one of the main five's networks.

If you go in to a 3 store you can get a 5gb allowance 30 day rolling contract for £15

you simply top up the dongle then go to my3 and choose the addons then select "Month internet" which is £5.

EDIT:
According to the thread at: thedvdforums.com/for…354
three have cottoned onto this and a few people have reported it not working.
I don't have mine yet so can't check.
But, according to that site, the dongle from 3dongle4free.co.uk (only £5 but locked to 3mobile) can be unlocked for free, then simply purchase iphone sim from ebay (£3ish) and off you go. if this works permanently, you'll have a years free broadband for £8!!

Any uopdates on this thread? i.e anyone found a cheap(er) dongle PAYG broadband package?

dongle4free doesn't work for me sadly...
