    Mobile calls to claim benefits go free,

    Most mobile calls to claim benefits will be free
    Need to claim a benefit?

    Call the national number: 0800 0 55 66 88

    From next week, six of the biggest mobile phone network companies will no longer charge their customers for calls to DWP 0800 Benefit Claim lines.

    Calls to claim benefits and state pension use 0800 numbers, and are already free to customers using BT land lines. But 12 per cent of UK households use only mobile phones.

    Calls to around 70 of the DWP 0800 numbers will be free as of 18 January. These numbers are used by people making initial claims for benefit and pensions and to request emergency payments, such as crisis loans.
    Dates for the call rate to change vary

    The calls will be free from 18 January if your phone is with:

    * O2
    * Orange
    * Tesco Mobile
    * Vodafone

    The free calls will start as of 25 January if your phone is with:

    * T-Mobile
    * Virgin Mobile

    Together, the six companies with whom the DWP has signed agreements cover over 90 per cent of the UKs mobile market.

    Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Yvette Cooper, said: ""We don't want people who lose their jobs or the poorest pensioners to be penalised when they need to claim benefits.""

    would you be such a @rse if you suddenly found yourself laid off with no income?

    Not everyone on benefits are on it because they want to, and "benefits" include those with disabilities!

    for the record I work, I drive 100 miles to work and back every day and my other half has been unable to work due to sickness for almost 3 yrs but gets no help whatsoever because I'm working

    Please dont assume everyone not working is doing so through choice.

    shouldn't this be in the Freebies section?

    agreed, though i have no problem with genuine claimers
    i was out of work in the summer for 5 weeks in august......dont need the money but thought ive worked 22 years and not claimed - so i did and they said i hadnt paid ni for ONE month 2 years ago - i had but trying to talk to those dimwits was near impossible.....i couldnt be bothered to argue as just passed about and spend ages on the phone! i would get more sense out of a brick wall than someone in the job centre
    in the end i signed up but received nothing...in fact i must have been the only person in this country to pay to be on the dole....paid carpark fees the office is in the town centre - really convenient, not - to go to the dole office to sign on - WHY? why not sign on remotely? anyway id rather work, going to the dole office is always a good motivator to get a job, not that i needed it...lol
    at xmas i was in the same boat....didnt bother even signing on....waste of time...now have a permie job as IT/Telco contract market is a bit dead at the mo :-D

    Fair enough, but unfortunately alot of people in this country are lazy...why do you think there are so many foreigners....in my town, Reading, there is NO excuse for being unemployed unless you not able to eg. long term ill, etc...but there were plenty when i was there....mind you one guy had a tatoo on this neck that said "idiot" or something stupid like that......hmmm wonder why he cant get a job :roll:
