Mobile Phone Apps - Help - I'm Confused!!

Can anyone tell me if apps are only available on iphones or if they are available on lots of phones? If they are available on other phones, which ones?

I really like the idea of them but an iphone is a bit out of my league!!

Thank you for your advice!!

Hi,

there are apps on HTC phones too, not too sure about other phones though

The iPhone apps are only available on the iPhone, iPod Touches and iPads, no other phones use the same apps as the iPhone, however some creators port their creations onto Android and maybe even Blackberry for a bigger customer base.

For amount of apps, iPhone is definitely the best, with Android behind then the rest still a way back from Android.

I sort of thought it would mainly be for an iphone! What's an android phone?

android is just the operating system. any smartphone that's touchscreen has apps

I don't know about phones in general, but the Nokia N900 uses an open source operating system (basically meaning that anybody who wants to can make a program or "app" without having to get permission), so there are a fair number of programs or apps available for that (you can see some examples in the Ovi store or www.maemo.org), and the other Nokia Nseries phones can also run other software not already included with them (for example there is a version of Garmin's satnav software available which works on N95s and probably others such as the N96 and N97). There is of course a downside - with the exception of the N900 (which is more like a computer than just a phone), the other Nseries phones seem a little slow when scrolling through menus etc. but you soon get used to it. As I say, I don't claim to know a lot about mobiles in general, what I say is based on my experience of Nokia's Nseries, having had an N70, N73, N95 (briefly), N95 8GB and now an N900. You might find some of the older or less popular models available quite cheaply (even the N900 has come down lately).

I prefer android as, in the long run, Android will overtake the iPhone in the overall share of the market and then devs will start more careful writing for Android phones.

And just to be straight Android is not just HTC, android is the operating system that nearly everyone with a voice in the mobile phone market without their own dedicated OS will use, HTC just adapted it to their own User Interface.

But most of the iphone apps are reincarnations of other apps anyway, there are about 20 unique ones lol....

Most of them are just web applets, masquerading as apps...

In order of sheer number of Apps
iPhone
Android
WinMo
Nokia
Blackberry
Palm
others......

All have similar apps but none are compatible with one another.

Some would say the quality of Apps makes up for the quantity in the more popular of handsets.
Android is becoming increasingly availabile from the major Manufacturers.
HTC, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Acer etc. all make Android handsets.
But they also make WIndows handsets too. Don't be too hung up on the apps and think about usability, configurability etc.

Depends on the handset.
