Mobile phone as regular GPS in car?

just wondering if anyone using mobiles like Nokia 5800, Apple iphone et al as regular GPS to travel around?

am due for an upgrade wondering if it is worth to get one of these phones for my first car to avoid buying a tomtom.

    please give your opinions

    cheers

I have a windows mobile pda phone and use it for gps far more convieniant than makin sure i have a seperate tomtom with me and Im usually guaranteed to have it with me whereever it may be needed, its running tomtom software and works perfectly for me

I use an iphone if needed, dont use it much, its ok for the odd trips but if I were going to use it regularly then would buy a standalone unit

    Same here.

I also have another option of Nav4all on my work Blackberry which I use very occasionally.

I use TomTom on the N96 and its the best thing since sliced bread, use it with a bluetooth GPS receiver

TomTom is available for a lot of Symbian based Smartphones as well as a Pocket PC version, its the best thing ever and a lot of theives target cars just for their sat navs, with the phones you always take it with you anyway...

A decent phone will replace a PDA, Digital Camera, Sat Nav and MP3 player

I've been using an N95 and Garmin for the last year. It's not as good as having a dedicated sat nav, but still gets you from A to B.

N95 has been the best phone ever... never had a single problem with the GPS on them, its the only phone I have ever had for the full 18 months of a contract... Loved it, skipped to the N96 love it too but hate the keyboard... Have sold quite a lot of N95's too and never had a problem with any of them...

Try updating your phones firmware it should pick up the signal faster, otherwise the aerial of it may be damaged, its at the bottom of the phone, so make sure its not being covered by covers or car holders...

Oops forgot to mention, just got an N86 today cant stand the flat keys on these but much nicer looking and sleeker than the N96 havent got around to using it yet

Have you tried sliding the phone upwards so that the keypad is exposed? The GPS deely is hidden under the keys, so that should improve reception slightly.

Guess you're pretty much scuppered on the n95 front, then. What d'you reckon, is it that the environment you're in is bad, or just that the phone's horribly insensitive?

Theres definately something wrong there mate, try taking it to a decent shop that can take a look for you... It shouldnt take that long, my one used to take at the longest 45 seconds usually picks up after 30 though, it was faster than the standalone copilot branded bluetooth gps receiver I have... The longest its ever taken me on someone elses N95 is 2 mins and their phone was damaged, after a quick clean it started picking up much quicker
