Mobility scooters - what should one know before purchasing them?

    Afternoon crew

I have an elderly friend who has pretty much lost the use of her legs. Back when my nan was alive she bought a mobility scooter which helped her out a lot, so I'm thinking such a thing would work wonders here.

My nan owned a 'Shoprider', looked like a Sovereign. I've seen these listed online for around £700 new... This is the sort of thing that'd work - swivel chair, space for a bit of shopping, etc.

I will probably look at some scooter showroom with her at some point, so does anyone know if there's anything worth looking out for? Any tips of saving her some $$$? Recommend a supplier?

    Thanks !!

Main things to consider..... Top speed.... 4, 6 or 8mph and range.

Everything else is down to personal preferences on appearance and reliability (which would be unknowns without reading!

legal max speed on the pavement 4mph

For when and if you do get one - Not to go too fast in them,my Mum was almost knocked down on the path by 1 about a mth ago. Luckily my daughter was otherside holding her hand,if she been the other side, she would been knocked down.

Guy was going way to fast round the corner, didn't expect anyone to be there, needless to say he come out ,was laid in gutter, scooter was not upright.

Check the expected battery duration... Many are pretty poor and if someone with limited mobility conks out on the way home then it's not good is it.

Battery life is a big problem, so if they sell you a reconditioned make sure the battery is guaranteed.

I know this may sound daft but does she actually want one??
The reason i say this is we got my gran one but she refused to use it and said she had never actually asked for one we had just presumed she wanted one.

If she does want one i would go in to your local shop have s sit and a ride round then find out the model and name/number and then try the internet or post another thread saying what you want or pm me and ill check the internet and your local shops , i dont mind trying to help

I think they are seen as unfashionable, someone really should pimp them up - I really look forward to racing round in one of these things. I'll load up on 4 lithium batteries and soup up the motor to get 4 wheel drive and use Nitrous boost to **** the little kiddies up on their 2 wheel shitesters

One thing I would suggest is, don't buy brand new. For a really good one brand new, you'll pay about £3000. If you buy a Near New one from eBay, you'll pay around £600 for the same one!!

I know this out of experience. My father bought a top model about 6 months before he passed away. He used it about 4 times and after he died I only got offered £250 for it, even though it was still absolutely immaculate. I decided to keep hold of it, just in case, as I suffer from arthritis in my knees and you just never know!!

Watch some new ones on eBay as well. They look really smart, but the batteries are really poor and are not capable of the 8mph you'll need to go on the road with. Look for one that has atlease 2 70A batteries and capable of the 8 mph.

So then lumoruk. I have to ask. Where were you at the time of the incident? ..............
