It's possible your screen resolution is set too high, boot into safe, go to display settings ., lower screen res and have another bash, post here if no joy!

have you tried reseating the graphics card? if its a seperate card

Almost certainly wrong resolution setting for monitor,

bump .....

if your pc is connected up to anything else such as your tv, it may be set to show windows on that other screen instead of your monitor. This would only happen once windows had loaded. Again, this will be in your graphics settings.

uninstall drivers for the graphics card, reboot, and redetect/install them.

Is it a Sony Vaio? I've seen 3 machines with the same symptoms.

This is a common fault fault usually caused by the heat build up on the graphics chip causing it to be unseated from the heatsink and/or damaged. The test for this would be to do the following:

uninstall the current graphics card in safe mode.
install the original driver (not the most recent) for the graphics card.
Leave it running for an hour in safe mode.
After the hour, try a restart into normal mode. If it boots and works using the original driver then the graphics chip is faulty.
