Moral Dilemma - help and advice needed please XBOX enthusiasts especially

Hi. Today I went with my son to purchase an Xbox 60gb console bundle. After we got home he unpacked it but insisted on bringing it down stairs to set up on the large tv in the lounge. He positioned it vertically and wished now that he hadn't. After a mere 15-20 game play, tragedy was to strike. Dear baby sister knocked into it, completely innocently (she is only 22 months after all) and straightaway the game froze. My son tried to reset the console but to no avail. He tried to remove the disc but the drive door would not open. We removed the faceplate to see if there was a quick fix but alas nothing. After hunting around on the internet, we stumbled onto the Microsoft website and followed the instructions to manually release the drive. After much perserverence, the door opened. Unfortunately, it would seem that the mechanics of the drive weren't working. Nothing happened to the drive when the eject/close button was depressed. Having spent £190 on this particular package, what should we do. My dilemma rests with what we say if I return it to the shop. Should I return it? Would they offer a gesture of goodwill and replace it? My son has sobbed many a tear this evening and I just want to get this sorted for him. Your advice and thoughts would be gratefully received.

Get it back to the shop pronto.

you could either claim of your house insurance or return it tomorrow

What is the best thing for me to say to ensure that they replace it for me.?

dont tell them anything except the door wont open to let the disc out.

    I'm assuming the game is still in the drive if so it sounds like the disk has jammed the drive. You have a few options;

Pay for it to be repaired by Microsoft (I don't think they'll do it for free as it will be clear if there is a game stuck in there obviously)

Open it yourself to do it (this will void you warranty so I don't recommend it

Gently (very gently) shake the console to try and get the disk to sit back in the correct place and then try the eject button again.

Return it to the shop and get a refund although I don't know if there will ever be a follow up that a game was stuck in the drive and thus it was your fault.

Play dumb, say you bought yesterday, Boy started playing it and it just froze up, oh and your quite angry about it.

Just say that it has stopped reading the discs, They should replace it. if they dont ask for the manager or threaten to get Trading standards involved

Just tell them that your son was playing a game, the game froze and the drive wouldn't open. They'll replace it, don't worry

When we did get the disc out eventually it was badly scratched.
In principle, it sounds ok to just say the door won't open to let the disc out but I'm worried they will ask more questions and I will end up totally embarrassed and end up telling them the truth.

Did you force the drive open?

it sounds as if the disc is out now. i would take it back and tell them the tray wont open, and didnt open ever. be a little upset but not too pushy. you should get a straight swap.

Get someone else to take it back if you cannot handle the pressure hehe

We went onto the Microsoft Website and got instructions from there to insert a paperclip into the hols under the drive to do a manual release. The door then opened but it didn't open on its own. I had to pull it open. All done carefully. Nothing happens when the eject button is depressed.

Why should they ask more questions, they dont know what happened.

Things go wrong all the time, it is nothing to them to have to return an item.

Just say you started to use it, the door refused to open (or it froze) and say you want to replace it.

I'm pretty good at speaking for myself but just want to make sure the story is believable. We are genuine people and it isn't my intention to deceive anyone. I just can believe how what my daughter did accidently has lead to this problem, unless the impact of it falling caused the disc to jump out of where it was seated and snarl up inside.

Appledore, what you have done is perfectly sensible. Just tell them your son turned it on, it didn't work and he said their was a disc still inside. You went to the Microsoft website to get instructions on how to get the disc out as you thought this was the problem. After retrieving the disc the Xbox still failed to start up. Please can you help me.

That is all they need to know.

You guys have been most helpful. I want to be able to visit this shop in the future. I will do as you say. How ever. how will I explain the scratched disc - surely they will be suspicious of that if all that happened was the game froze and the door wouldn't open? They may guess that something more has happened so I want to cover all my bases and be prepared on all fronts. I am very grateful for your replies. It's nice to get others opinions.

seriously dude, dont over think it.

Just take it in, scratched disc or not, it could have been the 360 that did it.

Like I said, the steps you took are sensible. All drives have that catch hole to open the drive (CD/DVD Drives in PC's for example). Just tell them you followed the instructions on Microsoft's website thinking the disc was causing the problem.

it happens all the time, they wont batter an eyelid! dont go red or feel guilty, its there problem not yours, you payed good money for that! good luck

That's a good idea, I can say that I thought the disc was causing the problem. Just hope it sounds believable. I told my son he can turn on the water works there if he likes but he said 'nah, not in the shop!' LOL. I will probably have a nightmare about this tonight.

Nipping away for a few minutes now to go package everything up. Keep your advice coming. I want to feel totally confident when I go back to the shop tomorrow.

Appledore I wouldn't worry about it. Electrical products that fail are well known to normally do so within the first few days of them first being used. After that, then things start getting suspicious. Then again this is an Xbox, they fail all the time, some people just look at them funny and they die lol.

If you return it when the shop is really busy serving customers they won't have time to dissect your story.

In a previous life I had great joy working for Dixons, Comet etc, (kill me now) Dont worry about it, these things stuff up all the time. You dont need to be honest about the 'incident' just say that it stuffed up, have an unhappy but willing to be placated face / voice on and you will get an exchange no probs. If you wanted your money back they would give you more of a fight, but most shop assistants dont give a stuff anyway. Just be polite but upset and bobs yer uncle.

Dont say you dropped it, dont say you 'forced' it open, make it easy for the guys, it all just happened you dont have a clue how, your wee lad is soooo upset, can the nice salesman make it all better.

    Good luck.

I don't think the shop will be too bothered as they will just return it to MS. You're not taking it back to get your money back but to get a replacement. They got their sale (and profit) and MS will send them a nice new replacement.

Hope your son enjoys his new xbox (and keep the next one horizontal)

Oh and if god forbid this happens again... DONT TAKE IT TO BITS!!!!

Just take it back, esp if only hours old. The shop assistant wont have a clue whats wrong with it, but if the fronts hanging off, it might just give him a clue:whistling:

    good luck again:)

Can you imagine this happening on Christmas day? Ouch. You got your TV back for a while at least, always think of the positive!

If you are worried go with someone

While it's worth trying to take it back to a shop, bear in mind the scratch pattern left on the disc when it's been in the drive while the machine has been rotated is quite obvious.

What exactly do you mean? The scratches are in a circular pattern and follow the shape of the disc if that makes sense.
I shall be leaving to take it back within the next hour so wish me luck! Thx, Liz

A 21st century moral consumerist dilemma. Hmmmm......

Well, if you are a Catholic, you have the option of confession to officially absolve your moral lapse. If you are from another religious sect, you'll find they have also built some sort of get-out clause into the contract to allow entry to heaven after telling your lie. But if you are an athesist you'll simply have to make your own decisions and take responsibility for your own actions; and no possibility of heaven either - with or without virgins, Chippendales, rivers of wine or luxury electronic items.

Good luck resolving it all...

Thanks for that! What side of the bed did you get out of this morning? There's nothing to suppose that it wasn't dropped before it got to us. My son did say there was a rattling sound when he took it from the packaging. I guess it will be a chance I have to take.
I am just gonna go along with the story that my son has 'told' me. I am going to plead ignorance to the other facts of the story. I wasn't there at the time of the incident anyway, I was busy cooking tea. I just wish I could turn back the clock.

oh i bet you can guarantee it was dropped in the warehouse before it got to you. Like others have said, dont fret, take it back and plead ignorance. They'll swap it over no problem.

hey let us all know how you got on plz
