More expensive quotes due to 'cookies'

Last night while searching for flights, i eventually returned to a site offering the best quote and found it had gone up. Apparently this is because your IP address is logged and when you return they don't offer you the same deal.
Someone at work reckons this is pretty standard practice on some of the lover cost airlines and some holiday sites.
Anyone know if this is true or just another internet myth?
Has this been raised before..i searched quickly but couldn't find it.
If its true then simply deleting your cookies will do the trick I guess and could be a top money saving tip.

I was told this precise same thing a few months ago by a reliable friend. He was certain that Railtrack (or whatever it's called this week) tracks you with cookies and keeps bumping the price up to scare you into buying quickly.
