    More free salad leaves!!

Hope a few people enjoyed a hawthorn leaf salad during the week. Another very common leaf to be found that is very enjoyable to eat is Ground Elder (other names Bishop's Weed, Goutweed, Herb Gerard)

It is a herb that apparently was brought over by the Romans. Previously I would have cursed the Romans for this as it is really difficult to get rid of it when it gets into the garden. However as it can be used like spinach or spring greens I am quite happy with it in my garden. I think most gardens that have weeds have it. Put some in a curry the other night with mushrooms and it was lovely. Also had some leaves in a salad. Best used in Spring when the leaves are nice and tender.(Apparently it is used extensively as a pot herb in scandanavia, and in Russia and Lithuania in salads and as veg.(Information gleaned from my books - Roger Philips - Wild Food and Seeweed and eat it - Fiona Houston and Xa Milne)
    Bon appetit!!

Can I ask someone if this could be posted in freebies??

Yep! You can eat them too and the mint in your pic! Put some of them in the curry as well.

Time to get out in the garden and collect the dinner:roll:

I've been reading a few books on the same subject over the past few months. (laid up after ankle surgery so I've got to do something ) Roger Philips - Wild Food is really good with great pics. I've also got Seeweed and eat it - a family foraging and cooking adventure (Fiona Houston and Xa Milne) - it's good too and is written by a couple of scottish girls. I also obtained an old Irish book published in 1986 - possibly out of print - called Wild and Free by Cyril and Kit 0'Ceirin. It is really interesting but they do seem to turn a lot of what they find into very strong alcohol!

    Hope this information is useful.
