    Motherboard and DDR3 question

Hi guys, building a new system, was thinking of buying the AMD Phenom II X4 940 Quad Core CPU.

I want to know is their any motherboard that can take this CPU and DDR3 Ram as the chipset is AM2+ / 125W.

    Thanks guys

try here, theres loads that can take it, when looking at motherboards look at the specs, it tell you under memory what it can support and also what cpu's it can handle

That motherboard is AM3, doesn't say anything about supporting AM2+ processor?

edit: CPU list here, not supported.

But it does say upto 125W so I take it my CPU will fit.

i,m not sure m8, i just put that as an example, there are others on there just have a look see what fits your budget, all id say is look to see how many memory slots it as on the motherboard, some have between 2 and 4, the more slots you have the more memory sticks you can add. good luck in your build, its alot better than buying from manufactures like dell, or pc world as u can build to your own specs

Yeah thanks again, I just get confused when one person says it will take the AMD Phenom II X4 940 Quad Core and onther says it wont lol.

    yeah it does
    CPU
AMD Socket AM3 ;Phenom™II /Athlon™II /Sempron™ 100 Series Processors look on specs on the link i put

    as for the memory

    Memory
    4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR3 1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory

if you unsure , when you look at motherboards, always look at the specs, it will tell you what it supports, if your unsure again, go to the makers website it will give a complete run down of what that specific motherboard will support

    it's an AM2+ processor not AM3.

lol yes and look at the Asus link that it tells you to and that I put above for a full CPU list that is supported. The 940 is designed for an AM2+ motherboard.

I get what your both saying yet the discription does say it suports Phenom II, which is designed for AM2.

Thinking about the following mother boards, both say they suport Phenom II:

    MSI
    or
    Asus

Just had a look at both manufacturers website and both dont suport this exact CPU, code HDZ940XCJ4DGI. Ow well. Thanks for your help.

Just to clarify you can use a AM3 cpu on an AM2+ board but you cannot use a AM2 cpu of any type on an AM3 board due to the fact that the memory controller is moved from the chipset onto the cpu. Here is the only currently available am2+ board that I know of that actually has support for DDR3 memory

To be honest I would go towards buying the AM3 version of the cpu, or, if you can't afford it go for ddr2 memory. using an am2+ cpu with the DDR3 memory seriously hinders your upgrade path

Think the OP may already have bought their processor from pixmania.

    Haha

No, I have not brought the CPU, allways plan a build first, so now thinking of a good CPU (AM3) and Mobo for £150 or less.

    Any tips appreciated.

What do you guys think of the following as a new build as I need an AMD CPU, the motherboard should have a HDMI slot and have 4 DDR3 slots.

I think that the following motherboard is good for what I want at £65 : ]Asus

As for processor, I have no idea, I was thinking:

]AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black ED or ]AMD Athlon II X4 635

I don't know much about CPUs but did overclock once and that CPU is still working LOL, which of the two above is a good CPU and easily overclocked, or do you know a better one in my range, I would buy the 955 if it was in my range but its £108.

    Thanks again guys.

Not bad for the price, but remember to look around on processor price as it fluctuates quite a bit between stores. For example I managed to get my Phenom processor about £10 cheaper. Also if your going to overclock you might want to look up core unlocking on phenom II processors

Thanks for the reply mate, I ended up buying the following for £299:

Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 640 Quad Core 3.0GHz Socket AM3
    Motherboard: Asus M4A785TD-V EVO 785G
    Memory: Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz
Case: Coolermaster Elite 330 Black/ Silver Mid Tower
Power Supply: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Modular

Which I think is a great price. Just need a monitor now and am thinking about the BenQ VW2420H for £163. what do you thnk? Its a 24 inch LED with HDMI, going to be released next week.

Sorry to hijack, can anyone recommend a case for a mini itx form motherboard with 5 or 6 drive bays, the mini itx ones have one or two and it seems they don't fit in any case

Thanks, they both say micro atx only though, as does pretty much every case I've looked at

I thought micro and mini was the same, my bad.

That looks nice. Trusted review sugest also considering the BenQ EW2420 which is the same panel but with a second hdmi and a usb hub.

all cases should have the mounting holes for the smaller form factor motherboards micro-atx and mini-itx as they are based on the ATX form factor.
