If your PC is old then you may find your PC Case and power supply are no use to you either.

Modern motherboards require different conectors than older motherboards, and you may find your existing power supply does not have the right connectors.

Modern PC cases have a special design to cope with the newer CPUs and your old case will probably not have these either.

So I am afraid you are probably going to have to start from scratch.

when i say old, maybe its not that old. I have an atx motherboard in there at the moment and an athlon xp2000. im not too great with this sort of stuff. i hope im able to upgrade it

Well you may need a new power supply, the amount needed hasn't changed but it's shifted to different rails. What does your PSU provide on the +12v rail? The connectors may not be correct but you could get adapters.

    The case should be fine.

With an Athlon XP2000 anything will be faster. You'll need a motherboard with built in graphics or a new graphics card as any current graphics card you've got won't work.

that's a socket A motherboard, I'd personally recommend an Intel socket 775 motherboard this may do: ebuyer.com/pro…246 you could then add a pentium dual core, something like this rates well ebuyer.com/pro…064 you could then add something like this for a PSU ebuyer.com/pro…115 (as it supports PCI Express should you wish to play games at any time later on) with RAM, that's about £129 so worth a look (if you decided a new PSU is overkill, without the PSU that's £104)

Thanks for the help guys. seems like im pretty much back to the beginning with just my current case to work with. well at least its a project for me to get on with

some of the asrock 775 boards accept ddr1 or 2, agp or pci-e etc so may save you a few quid.
agp x2 won't go in, but 4x and 8x is ok and using a low end processor the psu should be fine, bit of a gamble like but hey lifes like that.
