Mountain bike advice

I've been looking to get a new mountain bike for a few months now, but I'm no closer to choosing the right one.

It will mainly be used for canal footpaths, gentle off-roading and a few trips to places like Cannock Chases mountain bike tracks.

I currently have a 7/8 year old Saracen full suspension bike which weighs half a ton, with poor brakes and dodgy gears.

I want from my new bike the following:

Light weight
Hydraulic Disks
24/27 speeds
Hardtail with a good front fork

After seeing advice on here I've been looking at newish bikes on eBay and have been looking at:

Carrera Fury (Just missed one at £278)
Carrera Kraken
GT Avalanche 2.0 or 1.0 (if I can afford it)
Specialized Hardtrack

I got a bit excited when I saw the Carrera Vengeance on here for £250 but went and had a look at it and it did feel like it was built to a price. Even the guy in Halfords said the fork was poor and the brakes were Shimanos cheapest.

Can the bike experts on here give me some advice please.

My limits on price are £300ish, so would ideally like a £500 bike in good nick from eBay for half price.

A good tip is to do a local search on ebay and save it and then you get emailed each day when new arrivals appear

then use an automated last second bidder

I got a brand new trek 7300 (£400 new) for £150 with £30 of lights and 2 x £15 padlocks

I recently bought one of these for my son. Might be a bit more than you wanted to pay but its a top end hard tail for a bargain price.

Cheers John.

Depends how much you want to spend, I really like Giant bikes, but having said that recently bought a Raleigh AT40 (brand new from a big company) from a well known auction site for £300 (amazing spec for the money).
Just do a search if you're interested.

I have one of these reserved for collection today CLICKY

Quidco has tracked so it should come in at about £234 for a brand new shiny bike.

Should I give it a miss or will it be a decent bike for the price?

Looks good for the price, nice Rockshock fork for the money, no hydro brakes though, but at this price you can't complain, was amazed at the brakes on the Raleight AT40, nearly shot over the handlebars until I got use to them, I'd have a check on the Raleigh if I were you before commiting.

They are Hydraulic brakes, but the front fork gets lots of bad reviews on the mountain bike forums.

Yep, my mistake, seems very good spec for the money, personally I'd far rather have the Rock fork than the usual terrible Suntour, but thats just my opinion, go for it.

I'm going to give the Carrera Vengeance a miss at Halfords.

I compared it to a Kraken they had, and it felt very cheap in comparison.

I've had a look at the Raleigh that was mentioned above and that looks like a nice bike but it's about £100 above my budget.

I'll keep an eye out for the ones I've listed in my first post on eBay, can anyone add any more to that list?
