unless you use a music streaming service and one that supports what ever device you buy you will need a pc to load the music on
may be better to get somthing like a portable dab player

If you have a tablet with otg, you could download to tablet and transfer to MP3 player. Alternatively ask a friend who has a laptop.

iPod Touch may be the answer. Any music on iTunes should be available on all devices with the same Apple ID. If you have no music on iPad already then just get it directly onto iPod touch when at home. If you subscribe to Spotify Premium (there's opportunity to share family plan for about £3 per month on HUKD from time to time) then with Spotify Premium app on Touch you can download some content that is available to play offline (when walking the dog)

It's also a half decent MP3 player

You can download and upload to a tablet if you search.

Google is your friend

ebay
Buy a smartphone and use it as an mp3 player. There are lots of budget smartphones under £50 and even under £30.
Or get any smartphone on eBay that is going cheap. You're just using it as an mp3 player after all so doesn't have to be anything special.
Just make sure it has a microSD slot for storing the music and download music through wifi.

If you want to go down this way I suggest you have a look at O2 PAYG like new range on their website.

They have cheap smartphones available all the time and they have a warranty. It would be locked to O2 but that's irrelevant for a phone to be used as an mp3 player only.

Buy a cheap laptop, you'll need one for other things, it will make your life a lot easier.
