Heard something at work today which wouldn't surprise me if it's true that MP's are allowed to smoke within the bars at Westminster. One rule for them etc

are you telling us.. or is it supposed to be a question?

From what I remember MP Members Bar in the Houses of Parliment are excempt, would be interesting to see if a pregnant woman could safely work in such an enviroment nevermind anyone else.

Don't some gentlemans clubs benefit from the smoking laws too?

The smoking ban has not been adopted in the House of Commons and House of Lords. Only the corridors and restaurants had the ban applied and a pubs which sell food. I think there are about 6 to 8 pubs.

The reason for Westminster is because there is an obscure historic loophole which exempts the Palace of Westminster from health and safety laws.

I hope the employee's take them to court then, no work contract can override common law.

It is statute based. Read in to it a little further if it is something that interests you.

sorry, but why do they even have "bars"?

it's their workplace, not some seedy gentleman's club....

...then as a non smoker you should feel content that the ban has been brought about. Now it needs to be banned in public places and we will start to get somewhere. Why should non smokers have to have their air polluted by selfish people who already have no regard for their own health.

As a necessity, yes. I walk to work etc.

In response to your next empty point of argument...

Smokers can smoke in their house. It is NOT necessity to smoke in a public place. ;-)

im a non smoker (cigarettes anyway) and i couldnt give 2 ***** if they are allowed to

I used to work for a wines & spirits manufacturers in Auckland, NZ. There was a bar there solely for the use of employees - you could stay behind for a drink every evening if you wished. Friday nights used to get very rowdy (it was a free bar). Sometimes (often) employees would end up in the swimming pool that was also there for staff to use. Aaaah, the memories are flooding back - good times!

This is simply not the reality. Smoking is banned at Westminister except in four designated areas. They are technically exempt, but the ban has still been applied in all internal areas including the bars and private offices.

This was the case at the time of the ban, I presume it hasn't changed since.
