Music lovers - anybody fancy playing at being a Record Doctor?

If you've ever read the Observer's music supplement, you'll have heard of the Record Doctor - he listens to someone's musical likes and dislikes, and then he recommends a stack of albums for the subject to listen to, to try and get them turned on to something new.

I certainly need some recommendations (mor on that below). Just wondered if any like-minded people would like to share some ideas and recommendations in this way?

So - try me out. I'm predominantly a rock/indie fan who got into music in a big way in the early 90's, just as Britpop was growing, but I also loved grunge and American rock (Blind Melon, Counting Crows etc). I've always loved hip-hop beats, but I'm not too much of a fan of rap - which is why my favourite record of recent times is 'Tale of Two Cities' by Mr Hudson & The Library. I love music with a strong melody and strong vocals; I don't think much of the current slew of bands whose vocals are right down in the music. I like my music a bit rough and sloppy, as long as it's passionate. Other favourite records of the last few years include Kasabian's debut album, Jamie T's 'Panic Prevention', and Seasick Steve's "I Started off with Nothing...".

Any recommendations for me, please? Artists and albums please, not so much single songs...

Have you tried last.fm website. It works in a similar way. You type in what music you like and recommends a playlist of similar music.

I have Trina - for me personally, it only offers a very rough fit...I guess that's because it's based on thousands of users' recommendations. I type in Pearl Jam and end up getting an endless stream of unknown American artists, all of which sound alike. I'm after some very targeted recommendations! ;o)

Spotify has a similar thing, it recommends songs based on what you have been listening to.

Just checking the obvious: Faith No More? Soundgarden?

I like Pearl Jam, seen em Live at Wembley

How about Live (the band) Try the "Throwing Copper" album?

Hip Hop / Rap not my thing, but I like a bit of Beastie Boys.

Yep - already fans of all of those. I'm also partial to some Beasties too - 3MCs and 1DJ (video version) really is awesome old skool stuff.

I guess what I'm looking for is something new that ticks all my boxes...fickle, aren't I? Lol...

    Try Mumford and Sons...

I've got them coming out of my earholes...them, HMV Playlists and Word Magazine's "Now Hear This" CDs make a good slab of my CD collection! I never hear that much that I like...thinking my tastes are too far from the mainstream...

I used to listen to NWA, Dre, and Ice T a hell of a lot when I was younger. On cassette. Oh, glory day...my first car only had a FFwd button - had to flip tapes over, ffwd, and flip back over if you wanted to listen to the same song twice!!!
