My 6 year old son is not interested in Animals... can you help?

Ever since he was little I'd take him to the farm and wildlife park, as we were season ticket holders. At first I thought it was just because he was young.

Friday he came home with some homework, which said write about an animal you are interested in. Well he said he wasn't going to do it because he doesn't like any of them.

He is a very bright boy, who likes to do homework normally.

I tried to suggest various animals but his eyes glazed over and he stopped listening. The only thing he was mildly interested in was the beavers, because I told him that a beaver builds dams - and he is into construction so he felt they had a small connection.

Does anyone know how I can get him to appreciate animals, he doesn't have to like them - but he needs to know that animals are necessary, as are plants for the ecosystem of the planet? I guess if there is a good website that someone is using that is interactive - then he might take something in.

I'm asking for help here, because most kids i know love animals and he just doesn't like or appreciate any.

Cheers and rep for anyone with good ideas.

Buy him a pet badger for him!

(Or a Beaver, 'cos there doesn't appear to be much difference!)

Sorry guys I meant beavers - that's what i told him! Just wrote it wrong on the thread - I'll correct!

why not show him what marvellous architects can be found in the animal kingdom

    look at corals

    ants

    termites

    spiders

then look to higher animals like beavers, rabbits whatever

if you confuse him with info like that no wonder he is not interested!!

So what if he doesn't like animals? Does it really matter?

And, as is pointed out, beavers build dams, not badgers.

Please turn safe search on in Google before letting your son search for beavers! :w00t:

Why does he need to like animals?
If he didn't like Cream soda, then you'd have cause for concern.

Thats just the angle I need to come from thank you very much. My boy loves construction.

The only thing my boy loves about the animal kingdom is Expedition Everest! No lie!

its ok!! I was driving with my cousin once and there was a dead badger heres the convo that followed!!

her "awwwww look at that poor dead cat, must have been somebodys pet too bless"

me " thats not a cat its a badger"

her "no its deffo a cat"

    Me "NO ITS A BADGER!"

Her "no its not a badger, coz badgers only have 2 legs" !!!! :w00t:

btw, tried to get my daughters into the mechanics of whether suspension bridges are better than cable-stayed, rigid framed or truss.

know what? their eyes glazed over.

    Lol!

No he doesn't need to like animals at all -

One of his comments when he declared his dislike was - what is the point of them anyway!

Now I don't mind his dislike - but he needs to know that we need animals and he can't also declare he isn't going to do something at school because he doesn't want to - where do we draw the line?

    termites build mounds
    spiders make webs
    birds build nests theres loads!!

Now you are just being silly!

ask his teacher in school whether he is enthusiastic in science - animal habitats are on cirriculum

does he play with dinosaurs - equate them to newts etc

as a lot of people have said - i wouldnt worry about it

btw - have you no animals at home? dog cat fish

Do you have any pets? Might be a starting point with a cat or a fish or something

Well I thought the thread about mouldy bread was the limit of the utter ******** that could be spouted on misc, but no, this just about beats it.

    UNBELIEVABLE.

    Hey Butterflies
have you ever taken him to Barleylands in Billericay?

why dont you concentrate on what he is interested in rather than what he isnt?

forcing people to like things doesnt quite work in my experience

Hi Holly thanks for some constructive ideas here -

    He doesn't like dinosaurs either.

We bought him fish a couple of years ago - but he doesn't ever feed them - of course we look after them. My mum has cats, dogs and chickens but he just steers clear.

I will speak to his teacher. I don't want to change my boy because he is just lovely, but he does love science experiments. Like you say learning about animals is on the curriculum, in fact I am going with his class to London Zoo on thursday!

    Hi Kaits,

Never been there - but we go to Lea Valley Park farms usually (which looks similar), and paradise Wildlife park.

Have you been to barleylands? Is it good?

Geesh - what makes you think we don't usually!

This is one tiny question - where we want to help him do his homework - and help him understand the world around him - even if he doesn't like it.

Just because I would like him to Know that animals are neccessary doesn't mean that we ignore his true likes! Believe me - he keeps us very busy with them!

It wont be anything new if you took him there then. It was just an idea because my nephews had a nice time when they visited. They liked the ferret.
Do you think that someone has influenced his view on animals?
    Maybe one of his classmates.

God help him if when he is older he says he likes boys instead of girls! :giggle:

    best post ever!!! :giggle:

butterflies seriously dont worry...hes got a healthy intrest in construction instead, most boys do. my almsost 6 year old doesnt seem to (no evidence to suggest it) nor is he really into animals!!
everyone is an individual and i dont think that we should expect them to fit a certain mould. let them be and develop in their own ways.
