My BMW M3 engine blew up today, I'm razzed big style

Has anyone had a similar issue with M3 engines, it was 3 years old with 23,000 on the clock. The dealers are trying to arse me around with talk of excessive speed downshifting etc.

Maybe the weight of the snowman on it had something to do with it ..... ?

Next dr neighbour had an M3 and had several problems but not one quite as serious as this !!

When you say blew up, ie un driveable?

3 year old is under warranty still, isn't it ?
My peugot has a 4 year warranty (or 40000 miles) so i'm sure BMW can do better ?

If you didn't do it on purpose, and you are 100% sure it's a fault, get the dealers to scan the ECU, which should keep a log of everything that happened...

M3 engines are like this, they need servicing like every week lol!!! Take it to BMW and they cant prove owt!!!

Yep, dealer phone me the con rods have smashed the block up, I was driving normally shifting from 2nd to 3rd onto a motorway slip road when it happened.

The dealer are really getting on my tits now, they are trying it on - saying I must have dropped gears from 6th to 2nd or 3rd, I told then to print me off the data that supports this view, they can't because it didn't happen :x

Ha, ha, on a serious note though, I'm seeing loads of M3 engine failures on various forums, no wonder the new M3's are using v8's

The dealers are trying to squirm out of the warranty by claiming user error

Don't let them bully you. Tell them to check the ECU logs if they think you have been miss-treating it. Plus this engine has an automatic rev limiter that means you can't rev too hard until the unit is up to temperature.

They are obviously trying to save £5k -£7K which is what a new engine will cost to buy and install.

Not sure how they expect you to drive am M3. It was made to be driven hard anyway, and should last at least 120,000 miles of hard driving as long as properly serviced.

For all the people saying BMWs are not reliable, generally speaking that is total rubbish.

Raise a complaint with head office if you don't get the service from the dealer that you should

m3 engine blowing up?? didnt know that was possible!

Thanks Heaverton - rep to you. I'm waiting for them to confirm what they are or aren't goint to do, Then the fun will commence :w00t:

yeh, they are obvioulsy trying it on, why do virtually all companies try to wriggle out of liability for their products these days. after all, who'd have thought an M3 might be driven enthusiastically. doh. ridiculous. if they dont sort it, get the contact info for the head of BMW UK and write directly to him in a very polite, articualte and forthright manner. rational arguement will win over, eventually...

come to think of it there was a case in Bradford a few years ago where a new X5 engine blew :w00t:

the ECU readout will give you average RPM, and MAXIMUM RPM etc, it will not give you the gear changes etc.

Right, BMW are a pain in the arrrrse when it comes to difficult problems, alot of the mechanics are stuck up and would rather fob you off than get their hands dirty.

This creates a fear when big jobs come along. And if you are using an extended warranty this can prove a problem because the warranty is alot different from the standard BMW warranty, so be careful there.

Basically, give them another chance to repair the car, if they refuse, contact BMW via letter, and see if they will honour the repair. After that you may have to get legal.

with ref to a comment above, BMW's are not the most reliable of cars. I have owned 3 and to be honest, I have had about 20k worth of repairs on 2 of them. 1 was fine, they are expensive and troublesome. full of rattles and little niggles!

    which dealer you dealing with?

Spoke with BMW UK this morning, asked them to tune the dealership into reality a little.

The head of dealer service phoned me, he said he'd speak with BMW UK to see whether they will honor the warranty claim.

Should hear back in the next 24-48 hours, Jeez what an **** this is

G/f's got an extended VW warranty two pages of exemptions lol think one of them was catastrophic engine failure though I'm probably mistaken, got lost in the long list.

Some joy today, they don't think there'll be an issue with the warranty claim, but they need to know what component(s) failed, total engine stripdown, in the meantime I'm still without a car, see what tomorrow brings.
