My daughter will be 3yrs old soon - Problem?

My daughter will be 3 next month.
She watches cartoon's on tv from the moment she wakes up. (She's learnt how to put them on too).
Almost everyday, every hour, the tv is on and cartoons are on! (usually Tom & Jerry, Fifi, Scooby Doo, Mr Bean)

Once I turn on the pc, she is over to watch more cartoons, well this time, the same repeated Monster's movie I have downloaded, she refuses to watch anything else. I also have Shrek, Finding Nemo, Incredibles, Toy Story, etc, but she will only watch Monster's over and over again.

When I TRY to play on the PS3, she wants to play! Are there any PS3 game's for 3yr old's?!

Although I will be putting her into nursery in a few weeks time, what can I do to divert her attention to something that she will gain a little more knowledge and make her a wiser child?

Little Big Planet is quite good for that age range.

Play with her more instead of watching tv, playing ps3, and going on the pc :whistling:

what about a console for her, vsmile?
My daughter had a DS at 3 and half and loved it!!

Unplug the telly, switch off the PC, make an effort to play with her instead of spending your time on the PS3. There's a reason why she's watching cartoons all the time.

What??? Just don't let her watch it!?? How can it be a problem? Surely you've created the 'problem' yourself?

+1

little big planet and the lego game range are good for kids.
you'll be surprised how much intrest they take if you turn everything off and sit down with them and do some drawing, cooking, make things out of boxes etc.
easier if you had a boy, girls are a bit rubbish. ;-)

OP is in for a hard time with this one lol.

We do play with her, take her out, parks, farms, books, crayons, games, dolls, teddy's, etc,
but if there are no cartoons, nothing else matters for her!

Little Big Planet? What is it?

Cooking, crafty activities (christmas cards???) take her out for a walk

+1 WAS GONNA SUGGEST A LEARNING KIDS CONSOLE THING.

Also i only allow cbeebies in my house, unless peppa pig or thomas the tank is on nick junior.
Least with cbeebies some shows are educational.

Who is in charge here? you or the child? Set a limit (eg 1hour per day) of how much TV your child can watch and stick to it........Lego star wars (and you can play it with her) etc is good but again set a limit how much she can play. This may also mean that you have to set an example by not playing your PS3 when she is around and waiting until she is in bed.

The problem is she has learnt that by crying she gets her own way. No matter how much her crying bothers you, you need to stand up to her and not give in. It isn;t really about the cartoons, it's about her getting her own way.

Don't worry mate - we've all been there but if you give in now things will only get worse but children need rules and boundaries - there is quite a good book called Toddler Taming which is well worth looking at. Or there might be some stuff on the BBC website about to control toddlers.........

Link to the book is below

and there is a nice section on the BBC Parenting website

Your responses beggar belief, what you gonna do when at 10 she smoking, drinking and having sex.
You think im being flippant, but if you cant discipline and set boundaries for a 3 yr old what hope have you for a chnild entering puberty.

If shes actually turning TV on on the set, by a LCD and mount it on the wall so she cant.
Then either put on educational programs and hide remote or but a timer thing and explain she get x amount of hours a day and thts it and stick to it. She'll soon learn.

Ive no idea where to get them or how mkuch they cost but iv seen them on shows similiar to nanny 911

I think most children go through the 'if I cry loud enough I'll probably get what I want' stage, but if you give in to her now, then things are just going to get a lot harder as she gets older. When she starts crying because you've turned the tv off, that's when you need to try and get her attention with something else. Sit down with her and do some drawing, do some cooking together - anything that takes her attention off the tv. Hide the remote and if she's still crying, let her get on with it but don't give in

Thanks. A glimmer of hope. I know where im going wrong now.
BTW, this is my first child.

To be honest I think the only way is cold turkey and to endure the crying, it will get better!! Just be prepared with various distractions/games when you do it and hopefully she will gradually get the message that other things are more fun!! . Besides, I find that my little boy enjoys everything all the more when myself or my husband are actively playing with him, whatever it is, even if this means the housework, decorating (that I have been desperately trying to finish) takes a backseat.

Perhaps local toddler groups would help with the social transition to nursery too if you haven't tried them. The library is always good for toddlers these days, my local has reading sessions for little ones as well as a bit of entertainment for them.

Perhaps try and turn TV off at the mains in the morning too as this sets her up for a day's viewing. Try and be firm and say the TV's not going on today until we have done other things and that you're in control of the on/off knob, not her! I know it's hard but it will be worth it! Best of luck:)

Parenting is probably the most toughest job and most important job in the world and yet you get no training................

for christ sake let her cry. Tell her she is allowed to watched tv 2 hour max(1 in morning , 1 at night) she is 3 years old so should be understanding now. My little girl is 2 and i would no way let her watch tv all day everyday . Like today she will play with toys while having tv on as we had a busy day yesterday.

Maybe start disaplining your girl so she knows bounderies x

You feed kid's sausage rolls, what on earth is wrong with parents on this site. Watching TV, eating sausage rolls, where will it end. Sounds like students at Uni.

OP IMO it is you that needs the help not your daughter.

OP - You should perhaps reserve the TV for when you want to distract the child or for when you can't play or interact with them, eg when you are making meals..........

Nothing wrong with the occassional sausage roll esp with some low salt low sugar baked beans (Sainsburys - only place that seems to do low sugar ones without artificial sweeteners)

I'm liking the idea of the timer. I actually let mine watch peppa pig and fifi, i don't allow the drug smoking programmes like that weird fella in the orange suit, but i find the programmes she is allowed to watch helps her with her words. I couldn't sit with the telly on all day, my head would be well and truely battered, i much prefer to be outdoors then sat in also, as mine is a brat inside and good as gold out!

I don't think shes ever had a sausage roll in her life. I don't eat meat due the the fact of crap that goes inside stuff like that, so i would never allow her to eat them. Saying that i also totally agree with the no harm thing, if thats what the parent wants to feed their children.
OP, your daughter is actually ruling your life, put your foot down and show them whose boss.......!
