I would say they are more shocking nowadays.

Plan ahead, and start it as soon as possible, when is your's for?! i am hoping its not for this academic year?! get as much help from your tutors/course leaders too

Plan your dissertation thoroughly and properly before you even contemplate starting to write it, and research it properly using as many different sources as you feel are relevant.

Yep. Have a look at Louis Theroux. Started out all 'zany' and 'whacky' with Weird Weekends. Now all serious with his documentaries about gun crime, anarchy, and paedophilia.

Yeh, id be interesting in looking at the Fox/Sky SHOCK BANG HORROR Docs compared to say a channel 4, BBC Doc.

I'd also say that your topic is a bit broad at the moment...

you need to focus right in on something, so rather than all tv documentaries, for example look at two episodes of panaroma 20 years apart (or something), with a similar subject.

Also plan plan plan, and start last week!!!

great point, you need to make sure your topic is specifically focused otherwise you won't be able to draw adequate conclusions

i've written two dissertations one at undergrad and one at post grad level

i can't offer advice on the subject but more general points :

as already mentioned leave yourself plenty of time, do plenty of research, reference every source you use, get a tutor to read a draft of your work, any comments they have listen to and make the changes.

create a list of questions you hope to answer helps give you focus and is helpful for your conclusion

make sure you get others to read over your work before handing in your work, there will be mistakes you have missed out on

starting a dissertation is hard and it might seem like the finishing line is impossible to reach but you'll get through it and it gets easier once you start researching

feel free to drop me a pm if you require any general help or advice

    good luck

Hey i did mine in science but, make sure your references are done as you go along! Alphabetically in Harvard system as its easier to change as u add more in later.

    Good luck!

Make sure your sources are valid and that you draw points from either side of an argument, otherwise any observations you make will be biased and you'll lose merit in your argument.

Structure is incredibly important, you need to follow a logical pattern otherwise you'll lose focus on the points you're trying to make and you'll end up waffling.

I really enjoyed writing my dissertation, and it was the best feeling in the world to have finished it. Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice, Im a little worried about doing it in all fairness as it's such a big thing, never written something that big before and dyslexic aint gonna help.

I have already narrowed down what i plan to do it on, basically going to look at how documentaries push the boundaries,

So i guess i best get researching,

You need to narrow it down even more than that otherwise you'll just end up with a vague descriptive dissertation which doesn't really make any points and thus isn't going to gain you a good mark.

very good point reference as you go along nothing worse than having a useful quote and you can;t remember where it came from

all i would add is check which reference style your uni wants you to use my undergrad referencing was different to my post grad dissertation referencing as i went to different uni's with different policy

you need the dissertation title to be as focused as possible. Your tutor will help you but it needs to be like something that has been suggested above.

EDIT - talk to your tutor, they will have lots of example, you need to think about specialising the title around an area of documentary that you like, whether they be about war, teacher ect ect or around a particular channel or presenter!

I would say it would be interesting to look at the causes of the continuing evolution of documentaries on advertisment funded stations (ITV, C4, C5, etc.) into entertainment/freak shows (the boy who ate his own face, the man who married his own ****, etc.) while serious documentaries seem to only turn up on BBC4.

go speak to a lecturer/tutor they will advise of your subject have you not been assigned a personal tutor for your dissertation???

if you have go speak to them they can offer good advice

I think you need to have a chat to a tutor about it really, but you definitely need to be as specific as you can with your title.

For example if you're just going to say 'I want to look at how documentaries push the boundaries', what will you include in that? Documentaries about people, animals, lifestyles etc etc...there's already so much scope in how those documentaries will be different from each other that you'd have to try and explore, and THEN you will have to go on to argue how the boundaries have been pushed for all of them.

As someone suggested before you might want to pick something like Panorama (I think that's what they said) and compare one from 10 years ago and a recent one and see how the perspective has changed in that time. You definitely can't cover all documentaries over however many years, it's just too broad.

How long is the dissertation? That will have a big bearing on the breadth of your research question.
How much secondary literature is there on this sort of topic?
