Ring a locksmith Crash all over again

    I take it it shuts?

the lock hasnt turned round before your trying to lock it if you get what i mean, that might be preventing it from locking.

Sometimes doors shift a little because of the cold........
Try and give it a little lift and push and see if it locks then

yeh it shuts over and i lift the handle and then normally just turn the key and thats it locked but when i lift the handle it is not going up far enough for the key to turn so i havent a clue

it sounds like the bolts that are on the side of the door that come out as you lift the handle up are stuck or being blocked by something. Check to see if there's nothing in the way and also on the door frame side.

Have a look in the recesses where the lock and bolts go into on the frame, make sure there free of debris.
Had a similar problem in the summer and found that my 2 year old was ramming anything that fitted into the holes preventing the door locking.

lol thats what my hubby says i,ve got cant think why ***gone to check the door again*** :-D

Happened to the in laws door and turned out a piece of metal had broken off inside beside the turning mechanism next to the barrel preventing it from rotating fully, so the door would lock but you couldn't turn the key enough to get the key out, removed the sliver of metal and all was good again. Had to remove the side metal section off the pvc door to get into the bit that was blocked.

    Wd40!

Yes try WD40 and if that doesnt work just unscrew it, I know its late but it shouldnt take much longer than 15-30 minutes, better than staying up and not going to bed.

My back door at my last property had a problem where the inside lock wouldnt turn and the handle would jam, a simple squirt of WD40 did the job.

we have 4 entrances to our house and i lock them all but 2 are alarmed but the alarm has broken which didnt bother me as the doors locked! now one doesnt! i will have a better look at it tomorrow in daylight will just have to do a nightshift! we have been broken into once in the garage and they took my sons bike but we heard them but by the time hubby ran down they were off!

Also check if it locks from the other side as one of the pins in the barrel could be sticking .

oh never thought of that as i could do that and thats it sorted as such  thanks

You could try sliding the barrel out and check if it turns freely, put the key in it and remove the single screw on the side of the door that is in line with the barrel, then this will prove if its a fault with the barrel or the door mechanism itself.

will try that one tomorrow as i am not that good

If you have to replace the barrel get a snapsafe one , bit more secure.
    Also bump proof too.

    dont have one

Sounds like the door has dropped slightly from the hinges & can be easily fixed. You should be able to lock it by trying to lift the door slightly before trying to lock it. This should do the trick but will require some effort. In the morning, look underneath the all the hinges & you will find a cover which pops off. This should reveal a heaxagonal shaped slot. You will need an allen key. Turning the slot with the allen key 1/2 a turn per hinge at a time until the door closes easily. Start with the bottom hinge first. See how that goes.

some graphite powder on the barrels and inside the lock works wonders before replacing the whole thing

I phoned the company that fitted ours when we had this problem and thats what they told us to do and it worked. We hadn't been able to lock the door from the outside for ages so was always unlocked when we were out and we never got robbed. Mind you we have got two staffordshire bull terriors sitting behind the door so may put people off a bit :-D

i havent read through the other replies but this happens to our door sometimes and we have a set of alan keys to solve this! you need to take off the plastic covers off the hinges - there are three - then find an alan key that will fit and slowly turn a tiny bit at a time till your door properly shuts - its only needing a tiny adjustment done
