Hey, Looks like a decent rig. I recently made mine, and went the AMD X2 way. But that was purely based on money constraints, and I think the Intel line up is quite good, specially the 4MB cache. My 2c. ... I'd go for the 500GB HDD if possible, I know 250Gb is enough, but I bought a 250Gb 4 months back, 320GB 2 weeks back and now ive had to order a 500GB, and guess what, they were all the same price at their respective times. But 500Gb will really keep you going for sometime. But thats a personal decision...

seemed like a decent deal, CAS5 latency though, but frees up two slots for the future and is a few quid cheaper as well...

I think otherwise the rig should run most things today!!
    cheers

looks like you are good to go, but if i were you i ll buy a seperate cooler fan for the cpu.

You might want to check the support forums for that motherboard before buying.

I recently bought a P5K-C, and its the worst board I have ever had! Not because of lack of features or anything like that, but it simply wouldnt turn on about 95% of the time. Unofrtunately this wasnt unusual behaviour, many people suffered, and had many problems!

Once my P5KC was turned on, it worked fine, until it was turned off again. I remember one day it took me 4 hours or so of prerssing the power button before it turned on!

I'd check the official ASUS support forums, see what issues people are getting, before you buy it.

I replaced mine with a much more expensive board, an nforce 790i ultra, however performance also increased. It increased my 3dmark06 score by about 1000, just changing to the 790i ultra.

Edit: You might also wanna check quad core prices, for not much more you could probably pick up a Q6600, or a Q9350 or whatever the new 2.4ghz one is.

    scan.co.uk/Pro…237

Retail Q6600 for 124, only 20 quid more. And they often clock to 3.0ghz per core too!!

    CPU

Wouldn't bother with the E6550, its getting a little old.

This is faster (more cache), and runs cooler (45nm) but a little more:

    scan.co.uk/Pro…334

If you can't afford the extra try:

    ebuyer.com/pro…967

Or if you want to save a few quid:

    scan.co.uk/Pro…510

If you want to overclock then you can always get a cheap E2180 and run that at 3Ghz plus.

    Cooler

The stock C2D cooler isn't that bad, I built an E2180 system for a friend and that runs at 3.1Ghz with the stock cooler fine.

    Motherboard

That motherboard is rubbish unless you're desperate for SLI (I've had one, got rid of it). Get a newer Intel P35 board.

    RAM

I would go for 2x2GBs of RAM (more space for upgrade):

    scan.co.uk/Pro…626

You can get the graphics cheaper at Novatech...

They're going to be cheaper still when ATI's 4850 hits in a couple of weeks.

    This harddrive is better too:

    ebuyer.com/pro…735

Couple of quid more but 320GBs and 16MB cache.

    Or this one for 500GBs

    ebuyer.com/pro…454

thanks for info so far. gunna look for that mother board.

was gunna get a quad core but told its not worth it? especially for gaming?

says is not good for gaming?

thanks for head up on the graphics card buying that now

You don't need that motherboard, any motherboard with an Intel NB will do:

    scan.co.uk/Pro…326

    scan.co.uk/Pro…580

    Both are good boards.

The decision about quad core is hard, most current games make little use of anything better than dual core. Dual core overclocks further, uses less power and gives good performance.

Quad cores are good at encoding and will likely be used better in future games. You could consider a Q6600, they clock well, but run pretty hot. If you're not overclocking then its slower (2.6ghz iirc) than a good dual core like the E8300.

SLI is a waste to be honest, you're nearly always better off with a single newer card.

That P5N-e is a poor board too, it has a stupidly hot chipset, its not stable overclocked (vdroop) and generally is a bit of a pain.

The Intel P35 based boards are newer, have much better power regulation (important for quad cores),perform well and reliable.

If you're not overclocking then the Gigabyte P31 boards are well worth a look too to save a few quid.

yeah im not gnna be over clocking?
im gunna go for one of those boards you reccomended? or have u got beter ones?

Couple of things have a P5KC is a great board have had no problems with it once bios was updated plus has upgrade potential with ddr3 support , by the way 790i ultra is three times as much as the board he is thinking about Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 and while the 790i is an exceptional board for someone making a first budget gaming PC (Which mc lovin is see previous post were we helped piece this pc together) the board he is looking at is more than capable.

Mc Lovin get an Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro its about 15 quid and much better than the reference heat sink fan will definitely be better if overclocking plus not nearly as noisy.

If you want latest tech try this scan.co.uk/Pro…511
have only seen one review although they rated it high enough

Hearnia_2K great info btw whats the 790i ultra like? trying to decide between it and this Asus P5E3 Premium WiFi AP any opinion you have would be appreciated.

Who mentioned a 790i? (edit - I see who did), those boards are stupidly overpriced, don't bother.

P5KC is a nice board, I used one for a mates build, god awful IDE position though.

I'd go with P35 still, even if not overclocking, I like the gigabyte, but there's not alot in it.

Good info minstadave ALL MULTI GPU SETUPS ARE A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY invest in one excellent card as the benefit from two isn't worth the extra.

mclovin the best board i could recommend would be the ASUS P5K Premium/WiFi-AP £103scan.co.uk/Pro…151

Don't think anyone could have anything bad to say about it exceptional overclocker

He's not overclocking and on a budget so cheaper is better I believe.

Yeah what was with the IDE position like it was threw on as afterthought sort of discouraged use of it

Yeah missed that, disregard last two of mine

Still can't convince you to go 2x2GB instead of 4x1GB?

You've put the HDD twice instead of a PSU

But yes, thats a fantastic setup at an awesome price.

Pay the extra two quid for the 320GB drive mate.
