My iMac won't let me open any application

I have a 2012 iMac which has been great for 5 years, it updated itself a couple of weeks ago and now every app (Chrome, Safari, Terminal etc) will not open.

The error message I get is "PowerPC applications are no longer supported".

I read I should use Time Machine to go back to an old OS? Problem is I can't even open Time Machine - I get the same error.

Does anyone know a fix before I put a hammer through it?

    What os is it?

    El Capitan 10.11.16

Quick search says possible compatibility issues with 10.7 onwards. I would install snow leopard (which is 10.6)on the system. You can get it from ebay

    Because, it just works

Just boot in safe mode, (hold down shift) then restart again

Apple have decided it's time for you to upgrade.

Boot with the option key held down, this will let you select your boot option which should include a recovery option for El capitan. Boot in to recovery which will give you an option of restoring from a time machine backup.
