Probably when he's a bit older and realises the older he gets the more other kids react differently to him because of the colour of his skin. Sad thing is - none of us are born with any racial prejudices - so as small kids we are all friends - but we learn racial prejudices from our elders. So, us elders, who detest any form of racial prejudices need to enforce that with our kids and hopefully in many many years to come even adults can look at each other and not see 'the colour of the skin' and only the person.

It aint just parents either MB. It's the media - pick up a paper, turn on the news, listen to the radio (although the radio is probably way more balanced as it involves listner input / debate). And the small minded parents who believe the crap in the media then pass it all on to their kids.

Of course 'political correctness' (ie taking things stupidly too far to the other side of the coin) causes problems too, but these things get blown out of all proportion in the media. Every Christmas there's dozens of stories about XYZ being cancelled due to ABC. Yet, I am still to meet a single Muslim (for example) who is offended by Christmas decorations / celebrations / festivities. It's all crap - designed to reinforce an animosity by those who are served by an animosity between different races / religions.

    Rant over (for now).

wait magicbeans... what colour is your kid??

LOL at the OP (Post-not poster) xD

my son yesterday told me he wanted to be a rasta and eat rice and pea's for dinner (after watching rasta mouse)

You sure he thinks he's white??.............maybe it's you that thinks you're asian!!

I always remember when my daughter was about 18 months. Her god father who is black ( no sure the correct way of saying ) Sat with her on his lap. She turned around and said " you are brown, why?" I was mortified, but realised she was just being curious.

I think its great that your son see's himself like the rest of the children, Shows he has no fears over the different tone of skin colour

If my child asked me that question it would occur to me that something had happened that had started them thinking about the issue already. I would also wonder why they were so insisting they are white. I would approach this with gentle questions to try and understand the thinking before asserting my view.

I think it is extremely important for any black child to know who they are and where they come from. Done in a positive way relating to their heritage and family. However it will also go some way in arming them when the inevitable happens and they come face to face with racism.

bottom line is race is a social construct that makes no real sense. Children instinctively see that and it therefore confuses them greatly.

What a load of crap. Race is certainly not a social construct. Race, like culture, is part of who we are and is born to us through our genes. To ignore our history of our race is disrespectful to the millions who we follow in the footsteps of.

No need to be rude JTT, after all your rant loses all credibility when you think Chris Brown is the ideal role model for a young Asian boy.

Your right Race is like culture - a social construct.

As for our genes they are irrelevant. There is absolutely no scientific basis for the idea of different races.

I'm not being rude. Just saying your notion that race is a social construct is wrong. And the fact you think I offered the Chris Brown CDs a as serious suggestion is even more bizzare.

Reminds me of an old joke.......

Winston come home from school one day and decides he's gonna be a White boy. His brother comes home and he tells him. His brother beats him up and tells him he's being a jerk. His mother comes home and he gets sent to his room and told "you just wait 'till your dad gets home".

His dad arrives and he tells him. His dad gets angry and sees it as some kind of rejection. He gives the boy a sore bum (no homo) and leaves him sobbing.

The boy decides he's gonna leave home. "But why?" the mum asks. The boy replies "I've only been a White boy for a day, but boy do I hate you black *******."

MB have you've recently moved haven't you? Is it a more predominantly White area? That could be the reason. Other than that, I dunno. I doubt he he's experienced anything negative or he actually would have said. (kids don't tend to bottle things up - but do sometimes I guess!)

But anyway...... And especially you MB.... How you gonna react if he comes home and tells you he's gay! X)

If he's really light maybe he genuinely doesn't see the difference? My 4yo is adamant that she is golden - golden hair not blonde and golden skin. She came home upset at one point as the teacher had disputed it (she is kinda golden to be fair to her - a quarter Greek and tans quickly) so I'd just go with the flow.

Trouble with this approach in my opinion is that when racism does reared it's head if your child is "passing as white" they could be either party to or included in it to some degree against another black child. Then when they realise later what occurred and the implications they will be left with a lot of guilt and confusion and pain.

Jokes like serious views are based on a cultural understanding. What I am saying is your choice fell short on either count.
