my laptop is crap or vista, not sure

i got a dell 1720 inspiron on vista and keep getting errors, low disk space on recovery drive d, wont back up anymore, crashes etc. just not running like it should.
ive ran avg, windows defender, and got zonealarm firewall, nothing seems to come up.
is there some free software that will sort all problems with windows out as i think deep inside things are not well!!! plz help

run ccleaner? done a defrag recently?

From the message it seems you have a recovery drive D.

That drive will contain the file or files needed to restore Windows should it crash.

Normally that is all that is on the D drive, and it is not usually a drive that you use to store personal files such as photos or mp3 files.

Have you been putting personal files (or installing programs) on the D drive?

If so I would move them to the C drive.

If the C drive is full up then you may need to clear some space on C, or buy an external drive.

Well...Vista is pants anyways, but its prob not your laptop....

Best thing to do when this happens is to reformat drive and reinstall Windows. Start afresh. May take some time but it avoids lost tempers with Vista ..lol

It would help us if you told us how loarge your hard drive is (in total)

Also how large the C and D drive are (and also any other drive like E, F etc)

Plus h0ow much spoace there is left on C, D and so on.

Once we know that information we can give better informed suggestions.

I would always ignore people whose first suggestion is to "reinstall Windows".

While a Windows reinstall is a good last option, it should never be the first option, and is often the cry of technical support people who cant be bothered to come up with any other suggestions.

I remember a few years ago I worked for a company and I rang the technical support people with a computer problem and they said "reinstall Windows". After doing more research myself I made one small change to Windows and it was fine.

You MAY need to reinstall Windows but not before trying out a few other things first.

well i will find out that info, was thinking bout reformating and starting over, heard you should do this every 18months just to get rid of any glitches, im no expert though i warn, but will see what sizes the drives are and how much is left.
i havnt been saving anything to drive d on purpose, so not sure whats happening, thanks for info so far everyone

its seems that a program or vista itself creat ing some sort of backing up operation e.g. Mscocache in office, system paging operation, creating restore point etc.

but it is strange cos usually the sytem would never do anything to the recovery partition.

Hi There! Would it be possible that you can provide some additional information on your laptop's configuration especially with regards to how much physical memory it has present but also the version of Vista your running & also whether you have installed Service Pack One for the Vista OS on it.

    Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Thats why the quickest and easiest way to overcome these things is to format and reinstall.
