My oil light has come on in my car!

....yet I have oil in my car and only had it serviced a fortnight ago.

Could it be that the leads need changing? Would that cause the oil light to come on?

    Advice gratefully received.

    Thanks.

    what car have u got?

on your service statement, have they charged you for new oil?

    have you dip-sticked it?

What car is it? Its probably just that its getting to a certain mileage and that the EMU (engine management unit) will be set to alert at set mileage intervals to remind you to get a oil cahnge, this may need to be reset at a garage as its been done like you say.

Depending on the car there are certain "tricks" to reset it yourself.

Yes, used new oil and done a full oil change.

could be a dodgy pressure sensor...

Have you checked to see if there is any oil where your car is parked? Last time I took my car to the garage for a service, they hadn't done the oil filter up properly and oil was leaking out at quite a rate!

Hmm, could be that. Also noted my car has been a bit juddering on accelaration although it was doing this before the service and I hoped it would correct it.

The oil light normally means that the oil pressure is low. 1st thing to do is check the level of your oil. It might be the oil wasn't topped up sufficiently, so when the engine ran, it lubricated all the moving parts and this reduced the level in the sump. it might just need topping up. Ensure there isn't any oil leaks (Look on the floor under the engine after it has been parked. Also look at the exhaust smoke, hopefully the smoke isn't blue. If it is, get it checked out by a mechanic.

Thanks for all the advice. It's booked in for Friday anyway for the juddering so hopefully it won't be anything too costly.

    Thanks again.

if you have oil in and the light comes on its likely to be either the sensor (cheap and easy to do) or the oil pump, not cheap and not easy

You shouldn't really drive it any more until it is sorted.

Thanks for that advice - glad I read this as I was just about to go out in it! My garage is going to come and tow it in this afternoon for me.

    Thanks again.

Check oil levels, if you're losing oil then I would take it back to the garage soon.

Right, it wasn't the oil light, it was the service light. Basically apparently it needs a new ignition coil but they can't tell which one it is and therefore to have 4 replaced will cost £450 - bah humbug - there goes my bonus :-(

That sounds a bit of a dodgy diagnosis to me!
