download ccleaner, get rid of avg (imo) and get an alternative lighter prog (have a google search), uninstall anything you havent used for over a month or two (again my opinion), disc scan, defragmentation, delete temp files (using original os not ccleaner, sometimes ccleaner misses things).

I lol'd :-D

Some things to try:
- Stop some unnecessary programs from starting up when you turn the computer on. To do this go to the Start Menu, then Run (if on XP), type "msconfig" into the box, hit Enter. Now go to the Startup tab and uncheck any programs which you don't need to start when you turn on the computer. If you don't know which entries in the list are which programs, do a Google search for the .EXE file specified in the "Command" column. E.g. Reader_sl.exe -- search that on Google and you'll find that it's a file associated with Adobe Reader. Probably not essential so disable it.

- Free up some hard disk space. Delete any programs you don't need anymore by going to the Control Panel and then "Add/Remove Programs". Also delete any large files you no longer need (don't worry about clearing out documents and pictures, they don't take up that much room). You only really need to do this step if you are very low on disk space (check by going to My Computer and right clicking your "Local Disk" drive (your hard drive) and selecting Properties - that'll show you how much space you have left. Make sure you have a few gigabytes (GB) left.

- Increase the virtual memory. First, find out how much memory (RAM) your computer has. Right click My Computer and select Properties. It should tell you on the System Properties window which comes up under the General tab. Now follow this guide to change your virtual memory: delete-computer-history.com/inc…tml -- the amount you want to change it to is your amount of RAM x 1.5... so if you have 1GB of RAM, change your virtual memory to 1.5GB...

hope that helps! With Windows, all these tweaks are no substitute for a full reformat and reinstall of Windows, but that's not always convenient. You may also want to consider buying some more memory. It's easy to fit (just slots in) and isn't too expensive either. Go to www.crucial.com - they have a tool which automatically detects which kind of RAM (memory) you need and gives you a list of different amounts.

What browser are you using? How much space is left on the C: drive? in Task manager how much free physical memory is there once everything has started up?

nothing to do with slowdown. Countless threads in misc with people moaning that they are infected and have been for months / years but AVG carried on regardless during all that time

Trouble is those people tend to not know what there on about. (lots of users disable stuff, they also make the mistake of thinking the more AV programs they install the better)

There is not 1 anti virus invented yet that will recognise the headers of every single virus. That incudes AVG

yes that is the "Etc" well apart from fixing broken programs (I did not know it did that if it can) unless you are referring to system restore (but then I would never use that or recommend anyone else to as a first option) if even at all
