Except somebody stealing your car isn't likely to leave you on the sex offender's register.

lol but how else can i do it. when i reset my router to factory settings the security changes to WPA2 which knocks out my xbox live, and when i change that to WEP it knocks out my lap top conection. the only way they all work is unsecured :oops:

I don't have an Xbox, but it looks like WPA is supported on some Xbox wifi ]adapters. If you state the model for the adapter and also the print we may be able to get them all to "talk" securely....

how can details be stolen ? thats what virus /firewall protection is for though isnt it???

If you MUST run it insecure for the moment, please get it sorted out, at least make sure you are no broadcasting your SSID !! IF people can't see it, they're less likely to be using your IP address to download illegal content.

OK, right i am not the most clued up here, but you have your laptop/printer/xbox all connected up. this considered a network and they all have to communicate with each other, so if you are not secured then anybody with a 2 minute search on google could join your unsecured network and gain any info that is sent wirelessly. have a look at this video ]here

why go from the extremes of wep to wpa2?

wpa-psk is compatible with all but really early wireless stuff,
wpa2 needs very up to date stuff

What OS/Wireless Adaptor do you have? Most laptops should be able to access a WPA2 secured network...

Not really.. my 3 year old laptop can access WPA2-PSK secured networks...

they can use software which captures "packets" data that your computer is sending and receiving.

And anti viruses is protects viruses on your pc, nothing to do with someone using your internet connection. And once they're on your network your firewall is pretty much useless since they can access your router...your computer..shared files etc.

The chances of bad stuff happening to you are slim to none - at worst someone may use your internet service at your expense. Use WPA (not WPA2) and you should be fine, 360 supports this one and not the second.

I could be wrong however and if you live in London the terrorists may be accessing the internet through your router right now, placing you on the country's Top 10 Most Wanted...

Sorry if this sounds harsh but you really need to be paying someone to come and fix it.

    It's really rather simple.

If you cannot get to work with below . You are going to have to pay to get someone to set it up.

Now that you know there is no problem with laptop / xbox / printer (cos you have no wireless security enabled) and everything according to you is working

    ...

You need to log into your routers control panel. (if you don't know how to do this search google for your make model or read instructions or even look under router for login details)

    manual ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dir_products/dir-615/DIR-615_Manual_4.01(E).pdf

once in there you need to (EXACTLY AS BELOW) don't decide you know better it's just a test once you get the jist of it you can change your WEP key to your own choice (10 digits for 64 bit)

Enable DHCP (more than likely under LAN option)

Enable UPNP (more than likely under advanced/ advanced network settings

Take notice of the routers SSID. On all the devices you want to connect to via wireless through your router (would would need the ssid). If these devices ask for SSID you need to enter the SSID of your router. (if you changed the SSID and you reset the router back to factory it will have the original SSID again)

Then goto wireless security and use WEP 64 bit to start with (with you saying you cannot get all devices working on WPA variants)

DO NOT use generate WEP key option .. use your own use this for this test FCE2647380

after everything you tick you will have to click APPLY or OK or even both (the router might tell you it's restarting / saving etc) leave it to do it. Then log into the router to make sure your settings have STUCK .

....Now in your xbox 360 you need to goto network settings and use AUTO for IP and AUTO for DNS/

you also need to tell your 360 wireless adapter to use 64 bit WEP and enter the key FCE2647380

You need to also on all the laptops that use wireless to connect to the internet, tell them your using WEP and enter FCE2647380 into each one when it asks for the key to connect. (when it says a connection is available) under whatever SSID your router uses etc

Your printer will have a similar setup to enter wep 64 bit and enter FCE2647380 into that (use AUTO for IP on every device you have(this is DHCP in your router it's assigns Ip's to all your devices that are set to get an IP automatically

on your PC you would right click on your Local Area Connection. Your Wireless connection and choose properties and look at Ip/tcp protocol as below

I wouldn't rely on that too much as it's very simple to spoof a MAC address. The attacker just has to hang around til you go online, see what your MAC address is and then spoof it (so it'll look like his laptop is one of the computers on the MAC whitelist).

A WPA protected network with a strong password (not a dictionary word with some numbers added in) will deter pretty much anyone.

Mr Pedo finds unsecure network and surfs to his heart content.....Mr government comes along and arrests person of whom the ip address is connected to and seizes all his computer ETC...Mr neighbour finds out and tells all others....when you return your door is plastered with pedo in bright fluro paint and windows are smashed...now try explaining to your neighbours your not a pedo when your on bail for the next year and still under suspicion of .....

Now ask yourself do i really need protection.....as a fine officer of the law once said......DO YOU FEEL LUCKY PUNK????

You really do read the papers too much, there is not paedophiles lurking on every corner, surfing for wireless internet connections just so they can look at some stuff.

It is advisable to have it secured, however, MAC filtering and not broadcasting SSID will be more than enough for most people.
